Re: Leather cowl progress report : A good day for GA
Wow GA, It's already been said over and over again, that is a true work of art.
You started from scratch and made it your own, put blood sweat and tears into it, and have made this your creation!! To do that, and have it come out like this, it really shows artistic talent, dedication, and love for not only the bat, but the craft. I applaud you for that :)
I look foreward to seeing what you will consider the finished product, because... after seeing this, it's hard to imagine something looking much better than what you have now.
BTW, you have a good face for the bat :p

Re: Leather cowl progress report : A good day for GA
Aw shucks. You guys.
Really tho – thanks to each of you. You folks know your cowls so the thumbs up from this crowd means a great deal.
To answer the specific questions:
Link – yeah, formed leather and glued it onto a shell. (shell upper section is fiberglass, bottom half is more leather: I’ll explain more later today once I’m awake) It’s not hard in principle and my mantra has always been “if I can do it anyone can.” I have a bunch of ongoing notes about it that I’m updating and will try to post a link to later today.
Zane: I’m yet undecided if the opening will be at the back 2 seams or under the jaw. The front does make it easier to get on but the back might be more aesthetically tidy. Depends on how flexible a zipper I can find. You particularly might like to know that I could headbutt my way through a wall with this thing on: It’s build like a tank.

This is a prototype, but in the black and white picture it looks perfect! I know that someone who produce something sees even the littlest imperfections, but you can be very proud of your prototype!! Thank you very much for showing the pictures!
:up :applaude :)

Re: Leather cowl progress report : A good day for GA
Good God. That's absolutely stunning. I need one.
You've done it. I mean, a lot of people have experimented with the leather/pleather thing, and of course I've done a lot of thinking about it and creating designs without ever making anything AND your cowl is obviously unfinished, but damn, you are the first to create a leather cowl that really, really looks great. Out of a single piece of leather, no less.
And it looks SOOOOOOO damn original. It doesn't look like the movie cowls at all, it doesn't look like Adam West, it doesn't look like my own designs or Lee Bermejo's. It's utterly unique. And totally Batman.
I LOVE the cut of the mouth-hole and the bottom edge of the nose. It would look equally good with more chin and underside of jaw exposed so that the jaw is totally jutting out of the mask (IMO), but your more enclosed look looks really good too - MUCH better than the Begins cowl. The bottom edge of the nose is just the perfect shape - really BTAS looking.
How much head/neck movement do you have? I realise that once you start moving around it'll get all cresed like a well-worn shoe - but that only adds character. It's nice to see it in its pristine form though.
I'd say you should have the opening at the front. It would be very true to how the cowl is in the comics, when you see Batman take it off and such - that's where it opens. I think the seam there looks absolutely fine, and I think you could get a zipper concealed in there well enough. You could even (maybe) replicate the look of the cowl being pushed back like a hood if you were to partially unzip it.
Anyway... fastastic work. More pics please - I want to see the profile and back. This is a true original.
Makes me wonder how DavidYr1's going with his Lee Bermejo project.
And God, how I WISH the Begins costume designers had been this innovative. I weep for what could have been. No doubt they'll be bringing outthe same old rubber for film 2 :(

1st & foremost Great work. I know a lot of people who said a leather cowl " can't be done, at least not right"
I think you just put that little misconception to rest. great friggen work!
