Painting Leather Boots
One of my costume projects is Captain America, but unable to find male red leather boot and gloves my next option is to buy black ones and paint them. So who has some ideas? :huh

Re: How do you paint leather?
auto parts superstores like PepBoys and Auto Zone I would assume. They sell upholstery spray paints, specifically for vinyl and leather. They have a great maroon color spray if you're going for Ult. Cap.

GoldenAge may chime in. He's the leather guy to ask.
I'm assuming he'll recommend dying it. It's not hard... You just stand there yelling at it, screaming, "DIE! DIE! DIE!"

Re: How do you paint leather?
Get Nu-Life vinyl spray. First clean the boots with either the "Nu-Life" preparer or plain old acetone. Then you must first dye then either light tan or white. Then you can dye them Red. You can get the stuff at most good shoe repair/custome shoe making places or if you want to try online go here

I'm the leather guy now? I may change my screen name.
I have not yet got into painting leather - I use dye and dyeing black leather to red is an imposibility (you can't dye darker to lighter.)
When/if i try for a grey bodysuit I'm going to follow advice similar to Ed's. Never underestimate how importaint getting rid of that old dye and glaze is first - I still recomend using gel paint/varnish stripper - that **** eats through the old covering like magic. Wash the items big time afterwards and TAKE CARE to always protect your hands and face.

"The Golden Age of Leather"
It has a ring to it.
As far as leather spraying for me at least...
Do as Ed and GA mention, strip the old finish first...then a combination of sprays...I usually start with the Nu-life...then I find that it stays "tacky" SO...I will follow up with a light spray of Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric spray.
I usually like the darker colors, so I personally just start out spraying the black, if I wanted a brighter color, I would first spray the boot tan, or white.
Good luck.
