Re: My First Night Out (A fictional adventure) Update 03/16/10

Has it been two years since my last update? Time runs together and speeds up. I have moved my base of operations closer to the metro area, closer to the south side of town.

A heavy fog is laying over the city right now as I hang up my grapple and ease my right boot off a badly messed ankle. It would be far worse but I upgraded my boots to a set of Icon Super Duty 3's. They offer this hardened ankle cup which really absorbs most of the blow. The boots are in two parts now, lower boot as described and greaves for my shin and calf. More flexible, easier to fix.

Due to the jaw injury I sustained a while back I found it necessary to seek some outside help. I have someone now who can tend to the more severe injuries and, for their own reasons, likes to keep my secret safe. It's good politics to invest in those people who, for whatever reason, get tangled up on the wrong side of things. You show some compassion and later you have an ally.

As it turns out, I have a nice network established which helps me get the job done. As you know, there is Chief Harris. We continue our understanding and the scum I scape up is handled legally. Dr. Sylvia Arbanus, who, working for Oaker, was the physician I helped to get away. Bad situation. Oaker held her family hostage and demanded services for his thug "mafia" or else. Several others have gravitated towards me. Some fanatics, some talanted folks who want to contribute, some right here from this very board.

Still, I keep my distance and only communicate that which is needed. I will not ever have the luxury of a friend.

Let's talk about updates on the street: Oaker, for the time being is locked up. This does not stop him from running his game on the street. Do you remember the girl he buried alive? She is doing fine and I look in on her from time to time. Lately, she has developed a strange sense of justice. She looks at me in this odd way and I can see the wheels turning.

As I stated, Oaker continues to run his game so this facet of work is busy. It is only a piece of the puzzle. The nightly patrols reveal petty crimes easily handled, new gangs cropping up to gain control and corruption running up the line of wealth and power which must be revealed.

The biggest struggle, I must confess to you, remains the struggle with self. I have sacrificed so much. George (do you recall my friend and psychiatrist) has backed away regretting helping release this side of me. I think he felt it would burn hot and short and be cathartic in releasing my psychosis. Do you remember what he said? "The pathology becomes the path." It was not a path out but a path in. This persona is me, still split but constantly present. I hear it's voice.

But there is more. In my darkest moments, what is left of self, fears the worm is turning. In theroy and in comics, it is easy for this work to be noble. To turn over the bad guy for proper legal dealings, to not cross the line. It is the "line" where the worm lives. We keep handing over the "bad guy". Only to see him again, the same one, on the street. Free on a technicality to sell drugs again, to rob, to rape, to kill.
And it is here he says to me "How long?" True justice demands finality. Isn't it enough that the task at hand is great that we add to it by having the same ones return, with efforts redoubled?

Do you see where this is going? Do you? I remind him the streets are no cleaner with criminal dead on them.

I'm at the warehouse window now and the fog is being burned off by a bright sun. Blue sky above the fog line and the city looks almost hopeful under the glare. Perhaps there is hope. I believe there is, I have to. I reach up and pull shut the heavy black curtains that block the light and head to the shower. Night will be here soon enough and we need rest.

Until next time, reader.

Batman out

I've posted my uniform updates in the main forum. Now that I'm back after so long, I'll be posting some updates to my nightly forays in the next few days. It's been a busy few years.
