Cotton/Lycra Vs. Nylon/Lycra
So i am close to buying a unitard online, but i am stuck between which two i would want. They have Heather Grey and Charcoal Grey in a Cotton/Lycra blend, which would result in a flat, matte looking suit (no shine), or a Silver Nylon/Lycra suit. I am stumped, because it would be nice to have a little shine, but i have not been able to find an actual picture of what silver nylon/lycra would look like so i am not sure if it would be TOO light or TOO shiny! Does anyone have any pictures or suggestions?
P.S. - This is my first suit (it will be a comic style suit without armor) and despite all of my research in the past weeks i am still stumped about the unitard! PLEASE HELP!!!

Just for future reference... you only need to make one thread. Two minutes really isn't enough time to let people respond.
Relax and let people come out of the woodwork to help you. :cheers

I would go with the darkest grey possible. I like the comic sytle suits but not the cartoony look though. I think a shiny material would defeat the purpose of stealth!

I'd go with the Nylon/Lycra in a dull grey, if they have it. It's a beautiful material. I'm using it for my Superman costume. But definately go for a dull grey. You'll regret the shine.

Heather Grey is not a SOLID grey, it has white flecks in it. MOst grey t-shirts are Heather Grey. I also suspect that the charcoal grey they sell will be the same way, if the swatches certain sites offer are accurate.

Re: Cotton/Lycra vs. Nylon/Lycra... PLEASE HELP!!!
It's a pity but IMO no-one seems to make such garments (unitards, under-armor etc) that are quite dark enough.
Even the darkest comic-style suits I've seen are nowhere near as dark as I'd have a batman suit... I think you'd really want something that was about 85% black, 15% white... possibly even darker, but still light enough that black will show up against it.
That's just me anyway... I've never seen a suit done like this except in manips, but I'm sure it would look great, even in a feature film.

Of course, what is closest to the screen one is what you want. But, if choosing between materials, I would choose the cotton over the nylon every time. Cotton breathes better, and doesn't pull or get as ratty as nylon does....to my experience anyway.

You could also go with a textured sports blend to give the suit that "slightly heavier than normal cloth" look... tends to make it look more substantial somehow.

Re: Cotton/Lycra vs. Nylon/Lycra... PLEASE HELP!!!
Yeah, the slightly thicker looking, more textured stuff looks better, less cheap.
Something like Brandon Routh's Supes suit or the Fantastic Four suits... they were great, they had this great kind of course texture that really made the suits feel real, rather than just cheap halloween costumes.
texture and detail make the difference between something that looks like a real, practical "garment" or "uniform" or piece of real-life "gear", as opposed to just looking like a "costume".

Re: Cotton/Lycra vs. Nylon/Lycra... PLEASE HELP!!!
I havent been able to find any good fabric that isnt shiny either. i decided to jsut go ahead with what i could get, and the shine doesnt really look that bad, it actually looks more comic like, if that is what you are looking for. My body suit here is just plain grey nylon spandex i think, could be cotton, i forgot, but it is shiny.
i found a great place that may have what you need, though i havent looked into there grey fabrics yet. www.spandexwarehouse.com i think it was or spandexhouse. they will send you a huge array of swatches. when i checked for blue's awhile back i got 20 different colors of blue. give it a try.
