Original Ringwood 89 Chest Design

The November 1989 issue of Cinefantastique magazine ran a 21-page illustrated article on the making of Batman 1989. Page 53 showed costume designer, Bob Ringwood’s early sketches for Batman’s chest and back armor. These original drawings were much more realistic and functional, for what the Dark Knight’s armor would be like, if it were the real deal.

It’s also clear that Ringwood’s functional concepts were inspired by both modern football and Medieval torso armor.

What if a Level 4, breathy epoxy-Kevlar® torso were built to Ringwood’s original design and specs!

Ummmm... Functional, yes, but it looks TOO much like midieval armor to me... I am into some of the SCA/LARP stuff, and it looks just a little too close to home for my taste... I like the design they went with... But this is a very interesting find...

I think our military would be interested in that possibility too. :)

How much would that weigh?

Less than football shoulder pads. And screen caps of Batman knocked down from behind by the Joker's henchmen show football-style armor contours under the latex.

I personally have always thought this would be a great idea, and I know one guy who could make it a reality.
Let's see what you can do with it Zane.

But what about the weight issue. In reality Wayne enterprises would have to use space age technology that doesn't even exist yet if he were to have the protection he needed and light weight maneuverability at the same time. In our world the option do not yet exist and if they did exist in some other more affordable or readily available form like you are suggesting they would be very pricey or very bulky or very heavy.

See the thing that ultimately makes Batman effective is
1) he does it and no one else choses to.
2) He's driven and smart about going about what he does
3) He spends the time required and is highly trained.
4)He is wealthy and draws upon modern technologies available to no one else that gives him an additional edge. It is that edge we are gonna miss I think.

PAUL: Sorry to have to confess yours truly probably would meet most requirements you suggest. Sorry because I keep wanting to be done and rest easier! But then, that’s never what our dark hero does, is it?

BRIN: Thanks for the encouragement, good friend. And I did heartily embrace Paul’s sensible doubts several months ago, till late February of this year. That’s when Bat006 asked if ballistic Kevlar vest material should be used for epoxying instead of the felt. BPV material is typically made of 12 layers of woven Kevlar 29 cloth, which prevents bullets from penetrating without using filler or epoxy. But just because the felt is cheaper, Bat006’s question is still right on.

12 layers of K29, when epoxy-impregnated and press-formed in a double-sided mold, are only 1/8” thick. The resulting composite is both light and more bullet-resistant than the 1/4”-thick (before sanding), heavier, and more permeable 3 layers of epoxied felt. The Batman Returns concept portrayed this type of overlapping scales or lames design, and yeah, it’s conceptually doable and without Bruce’s big bucks. But Bro Brin, you know me. I’ve never been a sculptor, don’t have the talent for it, and don’t want to start! If you’re up to bringing molds with ya out here to Comic-Con San Diego, then together we might make a couple Level 4 chests. :wink They’d actually be quite light, and of course, comfortable and cool for real.

ECHOSIX: In the summer of 2003 MRS Bulletin, a journal for materials scientists, published a cutting-edge concept for infantry body armor and accessories. But the basic ideas showed up decades before in superhero fantasies, and today we tinkerers should at least be able to make light and thinner plates that are still effective.

Bob Ringwood is still very active in costume design - I discovered him first in the stunning designs of Excalibur, 1981, (Especially the creepy golden armor of Mordred) through the next 3 Bat films, and most recently TROY.

Troy! That's where I guess I've seen his name... While listening to the music at the end credits of Troy.

My wife and I have watched that film on DVD a few times now. I couldn't place exactly where I knew that name from.

Now, I think most of us already know about his "special" suit... but for those that don't... Zane's suit is probably the only TRULY functional '89 Batman suit we'll ever see.

It's lined with Kevlar... All OVER the damned place. :)

He knows his sh*t. :)

Re: ORIGINAL RINGWOOD 89 CHEST DESIGN

Hey EchoSix, thanks for the soul fuel guy!! I'm hoping many Bros will make fully functional suits, using my e-mailed plans as starting points for individual creativity or whatever. My present operating outfit is a hybrid of 89 gloves and e-K arm and elbow guards, 89-style Beatty-Keaton belt, Returns-style boot armor, an armored and electronics-fitted Clooney cowl, and armored nipple-less Panther chest and cod piece. If somebody like Brin is willing to swing along, maybe we could try and realize Bob Ringwood's original dream of a more realistic outfit. The Cinefantastique article did say, "Ringwood's early armored designs got softened in the final, more muscularly stylized design." It's all been good, and more real and practical would be good too, so long as we don't all get seduced by hi-tech at the expense of demonic impact.
