What Was the 89 Undersuit Made of?
Ok, Im a little confused here. I have read here that it was a bodyglove suit and that some of you guys have some from the people who made them for the movies. So I guess that IS what they were made of. BUT in the movie book it says it was a lycra suit with foam latex applied to the exposed areas.
Does anyone know why we are told its something it isnt? lol
Dude.

The '89 Batsuit did in fact use a lycra bodysuit.
The Returns suit was the beginning of the BodyGlove undersuits.

No problem.
The top pic is a scan from th movie book. Unfortunately I don't have a clear, high res. pic of it,but here it is.
The bottom pic is my '89. I used UnderArmour and probably won't cover the exposed areas with latex for several reasons. I don't know what it looks like to you in the pic,but in real life it blends very well with the armor, plus it's a lot cooler and comfortable.

Re: Just WHAT was the 89 undersuit made of?
You know, I've wondered about that myself.
My bodysuit blends in well with the color of Janty's armor, like yours does John... Janty believes that a coating of Latex on the exposed areas is screen accurate. I think it would turn out fine, though I would really only do it to cover the "sloppiness" of the glue, from glueing the armor on. My wife helped me do it as we were in a dire rush to get it all done in just a few hours because we were leaving early the next morning, for a costume party in Illinois and the armor had only gotten to me that morning. Just in time.
Would a solid coating of dyed latex raise the heat that much? The only issue I had with sweat, was in the cowl. I didn't heat up for the four hours I had it on, I just think that any of the normal perspiration that we all do even without exertion, just got trapped inside the cowl making it rather uncomfortable during the last half hour or so. With all the moisture, the cowl slid of WAAAAYyyy easier than it went on.
Do you think the latex coating would do the same thing?

Re: Just WHAT was the 89 undersuit made of?
I always thought you would only need maybe 2 thin coats latex but maybe you need more cuz im no pro. I guess foam latex is good cuz its lighter, and on the 89 suit it looks better. Wasnt most of the Returns suit foam latex though?

Re: Just WHAT was the 89 undersuit made of?
Well, from what I've learned, just one smooth coating of latex is enough, but you do have to put a couple of coats of Plasti-Dip spray over that. The latex gives a base for the Plasti-Dip, which would only soak into the bodysuit if it didn't have something there to adhere to.
I guess you could do more than one coat of latex on the exposed areas. I don't know... I haven't done it yet.

Re: Just WHAT was the 89 undersuit made of?
On my last '89 suit I used a small roller and did about 4 thin coats of latex and sprayed one thin, even coat of PlastDip. It worked pretty well
I'm sure there a some people here who know the EXACT technique for the real suit, but I just basically know the exposed areas were coated in latex to match the armor. How much or how many coats of latex and the exact way they did it to fit him so tight,I don't know.
You can see how much of the suit is covered in the alley scene. The whole back is exposed down to the small of his back and I believe under his arms are exposed as well.

Re: Just WHAT was the 89 undersuit made of?
I used 1 coat of latex, followed by plasti-dipping everything at the same time. I'll post a picture of my 89 suit, without the emblem, belt, cape, cowl etc.. and it looks like a 1 piece wetsuit. Everything blends in perfectly and because I use lycra it isn't hot at all. Wearing the cowl is the hottest part, except when it is a nice cool night.
