89 Belt Painting

Hi bros, I have an 89 urethane belt replica but I don't like the mustard color it has, I want it more movie accurate. What do you suggest to paint it?? I've readed something here about duplicolor (sunburst gold I think), is this the car painting stuff? And what procedure I follow before painting the belt, some type of cleaning or anything else??
I'll apreciatte any help, thank you very much.
Regards

Re: Help on 89 belt panting please!

Most of the folks here dust the silicone mold with a powder. Usually some gold, or off gold dust particle. (auto/art stores). In a phone conversation I had years ago with Paul Barrett Brown, he used a rubber bumper paint with a flexable additive. That meant that a hard buckle will have the same color quality as a flexable rubber belt. The original belt was cast in a fiberglass mold, and the urethane brand was "Devcon". The reason you probaly don't like the belt you have is that it looks too much like just a piece of rubber.
One problem in color matching is that from frame to frame it looks different. It's possible that there may have been more than one belt to accomodate certain lighting conditions used in a particular scene.

I was always under the impression that the real belt was plastic or resin. It looks pretty solid. Was the urethane they used really ridgid?

I fell the same way you do BlackwoodBat. It always appeared very stiff to me. - Jason M

It was made out of a very high shore hardness urethane, but was definetely flexible. I have used a similar urethane called F-80 from Burmans and it is very stiff. If it was resin or plastic, he wouldn't be able to get it around his waist.

The hardest thing in the world to paint correctly is urethane. Mostly temporary paints will work, but if you want to know a good method: pick up some stuff called Mr. Metalcolor, it's what Bates used to paint one of my older 89 belts through an air brush. It is flexible, dries instantly and has a very sweet gold/brass effect. Once you have painted the belt, you then get a lint free cloth and rub it down a little and it will give it that worn in aged metal look...or you can sell it and have me make you one with the metal flake already in the belt, in the method that Bob described earlier. emoticon

For what its worth I got a belt from Jants in a trade and the paint was dead on. As I'm sure most people here know I am super picky and I'm trying to get my 89 suit perfect and screen accurate. - Jason M

Thanks for the replys guys. I got my belt from Janty 6 months ago. The paint is starting to peel off in the buckle section, and I want to give the belt that gold finish, actually it's mustard color finished. Do you think the duplicolor painting will work on urethane? Here in Spain is very hard to find the products you have there, but I've found duplicolor sprays at car supply stores. Well, thanks again for your attention bros, see you soon!

Oh Franciso, I didn't recognize it was you. If the paint is peeling off, it must have been a bad pull, because it shouldn't do that. I'll send you another one if you want it.

Don't use duplicolor, because it is rigid paint and when you use it a flexible piece, it will wrinkle and probably crack off.
