Improving a Bronze Armory 89 Urethane Belt & Resin Emblem

Ok, I absolutely love the size/shape of this belt, I like how solid, and heavy it feels, and I like the color... But not when it rubs off... The buckle has already rubbed off all of the paint around it... Here's my question, how do I get the paint that's on there off, and how do I re-paint it? What type of paint do I use? Can I clear coat it when I'm done painting it to give it that cool shine? If so, what type of clearcoat do I use? I looked through the archives, and I couldn't find a solid enough answer, so here I am... Also, I just recieved an AWESOME '89 emblem made of resin, but I would also like a gloss on that, as well... Can I give that a clear coat as well? Thanks, guys!!!

Re: Painting Bronze Armory '89 Urethane Belt??? Resin Emblem???

I can't really help with the belt, other than tell you what I did. My belts color doesn't rub off,so I know nothing about that, but I did touch it up a little.
Also, the color is wrong anyway on all the 89/Returns belts. It's not just straight bronze or gold, but many colors mixed in.

Be aware that painting a flexible surface like this belt will make the paint crack...also any clear coat you spray on it.
There are definitely better ways to do this, but what I did was take acrylic craft paint and thin it down to a "wash" and went over the entire belt,so it stains it as opposed to painting it. I used black for the buckle and deep areas on the belt, then I used different shades of yellows, greens and golds and mixed in some bronze and silver with a series of washes and then dry brushed over the high areas w/different colors.
It's difficult to tell you exactaly how I did it,because I just go for it until it looks right,so I'm not sure of what steps I took or in what order.
It's a big improvment, but when I take pics it just looks like the same bronze color cause of the flash, but side by side with my other belt you can clearly see the difference. That's why I never posted pics,BTW,cause you can't see it anyway.

As for your emblem, why do you want to clear coat it? Clear coats just put on a thick coat of ugliness,IMO. You shouldn't have to clear coat it anyway, but if you want a shine, just use car wax. Wax on---wax off.

Hope that helps at least a little.

I have the same problem with my belt as well...I'm not sure if it's the same one as Lewis, but the color is coming off...

Rub-n-Buff Gold Leaf does the job

after you've finshed re-apinting it, spray the belt with UV protectant or fixatif.

Wow,I didn't know it looked like that!
I was picturing more of the bronze being left on the suit with the color still in tact,as opposed to the color coming completely off.
My suggestion was based on it still being a solid color with the thin coats of paint washes hopefully sealing in the existing pigments, but I guess it's not much help based on what I'm seeing.

I know there's a way to actually paint urethane with a paint that's made for just such a purpose, but unfortunately I don't know any details other than it can be done.

Which color of that stuff would be most accurate? Reevz is sporting the same kind of deal I will have (although mine isn't THAT bad... But I'm sure it will be soon enough.) Either way, I might do the rub N Buff stuff, and then go over it with a "wash" of black, like John was talking about to get into all of the crevices of the Buckle, to give it that realistic look... Can this Rub N Buff stuff be used on the buckle as well? What is the most accurate color of this stuff? I kinda like the gold leaf, accurate or not... Also, what brand/type of UV sealer would I use? Thanks for the info, guys... Very helpful!!!

Urethane is the hardest thing to paint, without the paint coming off. The best way is to make a mold of it and tint it in the proper color before you pour the urethane. I dust the mold with cres-lite brush brass, then pour the brass color urethane on top. Anything else will eventually come off again.

Jants, you're right on again about the best way with urethane. It's hellish stuff to try and paint.

When making my BK2 with urethane tops, I first dusted the tops with brushed brass pigment. Then painted over with epoxy, then brushed on more pigment when the epoxy was half-dried and still kinda sticky. (The buckle was cast in epoxy-Kevlar, from a mold that was dusted as you say; and the same with the cast epoxy cylinders.) The result is shown below in BRIGHT LIGHT (see my Avatar for an e-K BK3 with the same pigment, but in dimmer light). The urethane belt segments are both colored and sealed under a tough but flexible epoxy coating. Now all this said, I do think Bernie's sounds like a really simple and elegant fix -- and I'd also like to know what kind of fixative he uses that doesn't attack urethane.
