Re: Any leather experts out there?

Ok, I went to the Tandy leather store today and they showed me how I could do it.

Instead of cutting a belt blank into sections, they said I could just wet the leather belt blank down and stretch a curved section into it. Not to mention cutting it into sections and gluing it would make for a weaker belt. And it wouldn't look as good.

As for detachability for the drop-leg section, they said I could use snaps or Chicago screws(screw posts), and I could punch holes in the main belts at regular intervals for adjustability.

I got everything I need to do it now. I'll post some pics when I make some progress. :up

Had I been thinking straight i'd have mentioned that.

If you want the leather to hold its shape then use hot water - but the hotter the water the more shrinkage you may get, so go easy.

Looking forward to seeing the results.

Re: Ultimates belt progress(previously "any leather experts")

Well, I've finished tooling and punching the main belt section. Now it's ready to be dyed. The entire checkerboard pattern was hand-stamped and each hole was hand-punched(my hand's tired now).
Some pics:

Stamping the pattern near the buckle end was tricky because of the pre-set snaps for the buckle. I should have just stopped before getting to that end. I guess it won't matter anyway because that end of the belt is going to out of view anyway.

That was the easy section. Now I have to shape the curved hanging section.

Should I do all the tooling on that section before curving it? I was thinking of putting the pattern on first, then curving it, and THEN punching the screw-post holes in it after curving so those holes don't get stretched out when I curve the piece. Sound reasonable?

Actually the stamping took more of a toll on my hands. To get a good stamp you not only have to hold the stamp perfectly upright, you also have to make sure the force of the mallet-blow is perfectly downward, and the mallet is centered perfectly on the stamping tool, or it will show on a geometric pattern stamp like this one. And there must literally be a couple hundred stamp-marks on the belt now at least.

I stamped about 1/4 of the way between each break... and punched holes about 1/3 of the way between breaks.

One thing that made my life easier doing the stamping was I have a plastic grid made for my size of stamp that you can rub over the leather and it will leave the grid pattern on the leather. It took a big headache out of aligning the stamp each and every time.

The reason I decided on a checkerboard pattern was so you couldn't see any misalignments or unevennesses between each stamp. Otherwise I'd like to completely cover it... it kinda sorta looks like the woven nylon typical of police duty pouches(which I'm gonna uise with this).

Holy Cow!
You should really think about leather pouches just to complete the picture.

I'm not sure I want to limit myself to leather pouches with this belt. There are far fewer options available as far as shapes of pouches go as far as I can tell. I probably just need to look further. I can imagine theyre a bit more expensive though.

I'm having trouble finding pouches that look similar to the one on the Ultimates belt. Has anyone seen any pouches that are close? As a refresher I'll post a pic of the belt again. Thanks.

Also, I keep reading about "MOLLE" attachment for certain kinds of pouches. What the heck is that? and does that mean any pouch that uses it would be attached differently than the normal use of belt loops?

looking great.

The MOLLE (MOdular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) is the military replacement for the ALICE (All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) style of attachments. basically it's vertical nylon webbing straps that get weaved through horizontal nylon webbing then snap at the bottom. You can just stick the strap behind the belt and snap them, so they should work just fine if you go that route.

I haven't come across any pouches that look quite like those, you tried http://www.galls.com/ or any police uniform stores in your area yet?

I have. The only pouches I've seen that I like the shape of, are mag pouches... and the only ones I've gotten to see up close are actually molded and hardened to the shape of a gun clip. You can't really store anything else in them. So I don't know if there are any mag pouches out there that are NOT built hardened. If there are, I'd like to know which makes and models, because I sure don't know.

I'm actually thinking some of Blackhawk's MOLLE mag pouches might be suitable. They look big and roomy too, similar to some of the ones on the Ultimates belt.
