Returns Boot Construction - Pics
Even though I don't have a costume yet, I wanted to nail down a few boot construction issues before I begin...
It was mentioned in the Boot Archive tutorial that the upper calf section of the boot is sewn onto the shoe. If this is hard leather, how is this done? Obviously not by machine, but is there a special needle I'd need to get? Can it be 'gooped' instead of sewn?
Second issue: I understand the shin armor is Velcroed to the boot, but how is the smaller extension held in place? Is it glued or Velcroed onto the shoe, or the shin armor?
Thirdly, what was the actual base shoe for 'Returns'? Is it the same for the 89 version?
Thanks in advance...

Re: Regarding 'Returns' Boot Construction...
I went to Michaels Craft store and found the special needle and thread for sewing leather. If you ask them where they are, you'll get pointed in the right direction. It has to be sewn by hand. Or, if you take it to a shoe repair shop, that might work.
The boots in the '89 film were Nike Air Trainer IIIs. The Returns were Nike Air VIs.
The smaller piece can be velcroed on as well. I know other Bros have a better grasp on this than I do, but that's a start for you.

Re: Regarding 'Returns' Boot Construction...
OK...where to begin...
Belmont is correct..the needle is a heavy-duty sewing needle for heavy leather that can be bought at Micheals. :up ...also the sneakers are Nike Air Jordan 6's(I only mention that again because Belmont forgot to say "Jordan" :wink )
I went to a leather specialty shop and several shoe repair shops and they all said they couldn't do it and looked at me like I was from Mars, but hey, give it a shot. 12 hours later I had '89 boots,so they where wrong.
You can't glue them on because the bottom of the first layer of leather and the top of the sneaker only overlap about a quarter of an inch. The second layer of leather - very thin soft leather - gets glued to the sneaker and leather.
It should like this when you're done:
Anymore questions and I'll do my best to answer.

That's what I needed. Thanks!
And the smaller piece? Glued or Velcro? To the shoe or shinguard?

Re: Regarding 'Returns' Boot Construction...
Velcroed to the shoe.
If you look closely at the pics, you'll see a triangle shaped piece of velcro next to the laces. The corners of the foot armor have the opposite piece glued underneath. You need to be able to remove them so you can loosen and tighten the laces.
Keep them seperate so you can move better.
