Re: 89 boot mod
Are you guys breaking in these shoes before working on them? I'd wear them for a week before modifying them. You don't want to be wearing brand new shoes on the day you decide to dress up, you will kill your feet.

Re: 89 boot mod
I used brand new sneakers and didn't break them in, nor do you have to. I didn't have to strip anything off either. The dye just soaked right in and they were black. I believe I used the brand of dye that Matt suggested, but can't remember for sure.
The black dye will be very shiney and almost purple in certain light,so that's why you'll want to go over them with the very thinned down wash of Tamiya flat black acrylic paint. This will soften the black and make it blend really well with the black leather you'll be adding. If you use Tamyia,it's acrylic, so it's water based, so just cut it with tap water. Nothing complicated here.
3M Grip-n-Gaurd is not like Plasti-Dip. PD will not work. 3M G-n-G It is designed to use on wooden steps and the like to prevent slipping. It is a textured rubber spray paint that will hug the soles and so far has not come off.
I've done several pairs of these boots and have two pair myself. One pair were black & gray, and the other pair were red & white w/white soles. Both are in perfect shape and nothing has worn or rubbed off, and that was in Nov. 2002 that they were done.
If it takes more than an hour to dye these and have them ready to go,you're doing something wrong or cutting corners somewhere, it's that easy. In fact, I can't express enough how easy and fast this was to accomplish.

Re: 89 boot mod
BBB,I think my point to that statement was that they didn't need to be broken in in order to modify them, and not for wearing purposes.
I just reread my first post and it seemed a little derogatory. I apologize if that came out wrong. I certainly didn't mean that the way it read. :embarassed
Your point is valid. I never have to break in sneakers,so I just assume nobody else does either. :lol Some boots occasionally, but never sneakers.

Re: 89 boot mod
Hello Monkeybat,
I promised to post my results so here they are. The Leater Dye I used was "FIEBINGS's Leather Dye" and the color was USMC Black. I bought mine at the leather shop where I bought the leather for the top part of the boots but I saw being sold at shoe repair places also.
I did break the shoe finish with some Acetone based solution which they also seel in shoe stores. They usually call them Finish remover or deglazer. I broke my bottle as I was working so I don't have a name for you, sorry. But Like Blackwood and others have said, I don't really think it is that crucial cause now I see what they mean by the DYE soaking into the leather.
I then masked off the top of the shoe with masking tape and painted the soles with "Grip n Guard".
Afterwards, I used the Tamiya Flat black "X-1" and pour some into a little plate, added some water and mixed the paint and water just enough for paint not to be watery and not stay in the places I brush. (Hope this makes sense).
I'll post Pics to prove that that stuff will cover almost any color. Oh and That pic was taken before I went over with the wash of flat black, so it looks a little purpleish:
And this is the materials I used, Sorry the name on the dye was covered a little, but its FIEBING'S:
Hope his helps ya out a little.
Regards,
Roc74

Re: 89 boot mod
I especially like the pics of the cans/bottles of stuff to use... I hate shopping for stuff, because I will see millions, and millions of bottles, and it could be right in front of me, but I'd never know it... Thanks..
JCG
P.S. That's the leather dye I'm using.
