Latexing a Material Cape

I was thinking about making a material cape then covering it with latex as it would probably be easier to get the shape right and it must be lighter than an all latex cape anyway right? So does anyone know the best stuff to use? In the Batman on Film set visit that was posted a few days ago, the guy said capes arent wool and latex anymore, does that mean they used wool at some pont? I dont see how but anyway, any info would he great :up

Thanks guys, Dude.

I think T. Mello does this, as does JP Simmons as well.

The foundation of fabric may be more of their trade secret.

Idunno'...

Someone'll chime in.

If you can find speaker material, that works well. Y'know, that black stuff that speaker covers are... well covered with? :wink

It's light weight and is weaved nicely. That's what I used for a cape I did a few years back and it worked like a charm.

Hope that helps.

Jonathan

I've had a solid latex cape before. It was very heavy because it was so many layers of thick latex. Fewer and thinner layers would have made it weight less. Basically the amount of material in the cape make it heavier.

I've seen capes where a lightweight flexible fabric is then coated with several layers of latex. It works fine. Remember that latex soaks into pourous items like water into a sponge. Anything that is water-proff like vinyl will repell the latex. Think of cotton, linen, spandex and a very lightweight wool knit. I'm thinking a nice cashmere would be a great start.

I hope that this helps some.

Hey bro I do this all the time, you can use any type material you want. I usually go with a satin because its lightweight to begin. I use soft grade mask latex from www.monstermakers.com. After sewing together the panels I lay it out flat and roll the latex on using a smooth nap roller. The latex leaves a texture on the material that looks like leather when dried. Also,be sure to pick up some black tint to color your latex. They sell it in small bottles, and I usually put around 15-20 drops in a gallon of it. Depending upon how may layers your going to use I would suggest buying a 5gal. bucket of the stuff. Hope this helps.

Thaks for the info Daytonbatz it really helped. How many layers would you recommend? I would love to make my own cape but after hearing that even pro's like Paul have trouble making an all latex cape, it kinda put me off lol
Thanks again.

Dude.

An all latex can be a bit of a task. I usually put two layers per side. Just be careful when flipping cape over so that any of the latexed area doesnt touch or it will stick and your then in a world of sh*t. Just get someone to help turn it over to avoid any problems.
