It's funny but in some scenes the cowl looks HUGE. Weird. - Jason M

Jason,In a thread about a year ago if you remember,it is widely believed that there were more than one cowl used...probably three different ones.
In some scenes it looks different from others.

I really don't think they used multiple different sculpts, but multiple cowls were used. Speaking with Bob D the other night, we got on that subject and he believes that because using foam in that way back then was still pretty new, they may have just got different looks when baking the foam. Baked foam can tweak and change with each pull.

For example: Bob's urethane 89 cowl looks like the scene where he is shooting his speargun with Vicky on his back, his latex version looks like the cowl in the pic Jason put up, his foam cowl has a different look then the latex and urethane one also.

It just doesn't make sense that they sculpted and molded 4-5 different cowls, when it could have easily been the way the foam baked. Some pulls were bigger then others, some tweaked in strange ways etc...

I always wondered about that too....making multiple cowls, that is.

That sounds like a logical reason for the differences, though.

But how new was it back then? I know Dick Smith used it for Willian Hurt's body changes in "Altered States". I think that was 1980.

Both examples are living 'body sculptures',so I don't know that one is more complicated than the other,so much as they are just different from each other.

I think my point really was more like,it's been around for a while by the time they did 'Batman',so I would think the costume makers were somewhat familier with how to use it. Simply meaning that foam wasn't 'new' to Hollywood at the time, not that one was more difficult than the other. :)

Jants. I agree that it doesn't make sense for them to have made more than 1 sculpt for the cowls. Oh yeah, I have a cowl question for you so I'm sending you an email.

Also I read that they made 30 full suits. 10 for Keaton and 10 each for his two stunt doubles. I don't know if that true but I read it somewhere. I have sizable 1989 Bat magazine collection.
