Putting Lenses In a Cowl

I am contemplating getting some cheap sunglasses and using the lenses to attach into the cowl.

What is the best way of cutting them/ what tools do you need? Do you need to cut them at all and if not would the edges of the lenses not really dig into your eyes?

Do you just glue them in (from the inside or outside)?

The bit that really concerns me is cutting the lenses as I cant imagine what tools I have that are up to the job and I am guessing if I try I will just end up cracking the lenses (not that I am overly pessimistic or anything)

Ken :)

You might find that they don't need to be cut at all. Make a card template of the eye in the cowl and take that with you when you are buying the shades/lenses. Worked for me.

Re: Cutting lenses

I have done this in the past, I get some sunglasses in roughly the correct shape I need then I cut the nose section and the arms off with a metal cutting cut off wheel and a dremel. Then I just glue the lense (with the frame around them) to either the inside or outside of the mask (depending on the mask I'm doing). I usually use Bondini Everything Gel or Zap a Gap very sparingly to do this. Don't get the glue on the actual mense or it may fog it out, permanently. If you apply the glue with a tooth pock you should be fine.

Cool! That's a great idea!

What type of lenses are you going to use? Dark, mirrored, gradient?

Re: Cutting lenses

Well I picked up 2 sets of sunglasses today - one kind of mirrored and one yellow kind of mirrored at the total prices of £4.

I just popped the lenese out and they fit the eye sockets in the mask perfectly.

BUT

when I put the lenses in, they just look waaaay to dark, much darker than I expected. It makes the cowl look kind of funny or something and not how I was hoping.

So I have a few thoughts

1) Either I get ultra light coloured, mirror lenses somewhere

2) I get the car window tint I have seen people talking about

3) Has anyone seen Guyver: Dark Hero? Is there a way to make light up eyes?

One material that I think also has some potential is what you see note pads (with paper not laptops) using as covers these days. Its like a sheet of coloured acetate but reasonably thick.

What are people's thoughts?

Ken

Well, for light up eyes, one option would be leds. In my Arc Trooper helmet, I'll be having a band of 7 blue leds, making a light bar, similar to the Republic Commandos.

Obviously, you wouldn't need but one apiece, but one led per eye would be more than enough to have a nice glow behind your lenses.

That would look pretty ominous...

Is it trick to mount? Whereabouts to the LEDS go - would it not interfer with your vision?

Well, a buddy's mounting my leds in my helmet, but I can find out the process for you, or even put you in touch with him if need be.

It's not supposed to interfere with your vision at all. The led is just below the top edge of the visor, enough to light up the visor, but not to interfere. If you want to check the helmets, search on ebay for Republic Commando helmets. His handle is DFXR

You should be able to get a good idea of the effect from the pics.

Now, this is applied to the helmet's t-visor, works great. One led might be just perfect for each cowl eye, I don't think it would dominate it.

The visors are mirrored, and the light is still visible. With 7 leds, it looks like a continual light bar, like in the Republic Commando video game.

Hope this helps!

Re: Cutting lenses

Here's a little concept photo-manip I did a while ago for something I'd like to try.

Image

I would take light sheet and cut a mesh pattern into it as seen in the picture. Since it shines on only one side, the unlit side could be mounted on an ordinary lens, and voila. Light-up eyes, that shouldn't obstruct your vision. The pattern has to be a fine one in order to be seen through, but that close to the eyes, it should be manageable. I just haven't experimented yet.

Another idea I had was to get phosphorescent powder(a special high-energy, extra bright powder available from UnitedNuclear.com), mix it with some clear lacquer, and spray it onto one side of some sheet plastic cut in that mesh pattern seen in my manip. And mount it on the lenses. Glowing eyes without the need for a power source.

With either of these methods, obstructed vision should not be a problem because the pattern of holes would be close enough to your eyes, and the glare from either method should be almost non-existent because the light in both cases is being directed away from your eyes anyway.
