Attaching an Emblem to the Edge of a Cowl
How do you permanently attanch an emblem to a cowl where the shape is cut out to accomodate the emblem but there is no backing to stick it onto. I want to attach the emblem to the cowl and not armour. Do you need to like make a strip of (some material??) that is bonded to both on the back?
I am total beginner so hoping there is a simple way to do this with minimal ability and rubber epoxy.
Thanks!!
Ken

Re: Permantly attaching Emblem to Cowl
Just use Velcro... It's best to attach it to the chest & then attach the Cowl to the Chest too, Just above the emblem. It will give you a nice solid look

Re: Permantly attaching Emblem to Cowl
I cant attach to the chest - the chest is going to be a jacket.

Re: Permantly attaching Emblem to Cowl
I like velcro too and that way they are interchangeable. Supergue is just so messy and always seems to come apart at some point especially if you have painted the sides of the emblem

Re: Permantly attaching Emblem to Cowl
Perhaps I am not really explaining this properly (sorry).
I am happy enough with the glue I want to use and the method of attaching (ie - permanent) i am just not sure of the technique to use.
1) I definitly do not want to/cannot attach it to the suit. This is not an option
2) I want to attach it to the cowl.
Simply, I just want to know the most effective technique. The only to techniques I can think of are:
i) The method I described in my above post whereby I use a strip which travels under both the cowl and the emblem and is attached to each
OR
ii) I overlap the top of the emblem with the bottom of the cowl ever so slightly with the embelm slightly ontop (and maybe also a bar underneath for added durability)
Which technique do people think will fulfil my purposes best and/or are there any alternative techniques that will suit my requirements?
Thanks
Ken :)
PS - Artsee were you alluding to (a non-favoured method of yours) of glue being applied to the edge of the embelm and then that attached to the 3d edge of the cowl?

Re: Permantly attaching Emblem to Cowl
i know what your saying. this is what i did with my Returns commemorative ( because i cut the emblem off it).
i basically traced the shape of the emblem on a piece of thin punch metal. i extended the top of the metal part so it goes up the cowl more. i then just used velcro to the underside of the cowl and top of the metal piece, and attach. basically i just made an emblem plate. itll be more sturdy than the material idea you have.

Re: Permantly attaching Emblem to Cowl
I did the same thing but I used a thick piece of latex. I traced the emblem onto the latex and then drew a 3"x3" square on top of the emblem outline. I then cut the emblem outline about 1/4 inch smaller.
First attach the square piece of the latex to the inside of the cowl so the round piece of the latex is hanging out from under the cowl right where you want it. If your latex isn't black use black magic marker to color the piece that might show between the emblem and the cowl. Then attach the emblem to the latex piece snugly against the cowl.
The trickiest part is to get the emblem square to the cowl, which other than being careful, I don't have any suggestions. I personally wouldn't want a metal plate attached to the inside of my cowl, I get enough cuts & bruises trying to get a cowl on as it is. :beatup

Re: Permantly attaching Emblem to Cowl
Hey Ken, if you are going to attach an emblem to the cowl I am sending you, you will need to use loctite 404 glue, because the cowl is made of 1068 silicone.

Re: Permantly attaching Emblem to Cowl
I used some Loctite super glue for plastics & hard to glue items (not sure if its the 404) on my Janty silicone Returns cowl & it worked great. I glued the velcro loop (soft) side to the scallops & emblem & then took a strip of the hook (hard) side & used that to secure the emblem.
Not sure if I ever want to attach it permanently... I like the idea of being able to interchange my emblems to suit my mood (Returns cowl looks pretty cool with a Panther emblem ).
Anyway, the glue I used came with a tube of super glue gel & an activator pen. You color the activator over the surfaces of the two objects to be glued together, wait 1 minute, then put single drops of super glue in a sensible pattern, press the two objects together & it bonds instantly.
You have to be very careful that you have everything perfectly aligned though, cuz I'm not sure you'll get a second chance with this stuff.

Re: Permantly attaching Emblem to Cowl
I actually put an emblem cradle on my cowl that the velcro goes on and then I attach to that. So it is flat and lot of surface area.
