Making a Raised Emblem
Hey guys,
I've got an idea for my chest piece. Say, if I were to get a latex chest piece from XDFX, would it be possible for me to put an "embossed" logo on it? Kinda like the Begins suit's embosssed logo. Read on to see how I would do it...
Here's what I'm thinking of doing... masking a logo on it of it on the chest piece using masking tape, and using a paint roller to paint latex on. Then, removing the masking tape to have an embossed logo, and cutting off any extra latex. Finally, plasti-dipping the piece once the logo is on.
Would this work as I'm envisioning it? I was reading Artsee's page on how to make a latex cape, and I was thinking, why couldn't this method be used to put an embossed logo on a latex chest piece.
If this wouldn't work I have a different way I would like the logo to look, but this is what I want to do if possible.

Sounds like it would work... I'd try it... if it doesn't, you could probably just peel the latex off, and try again. I wish I could provide a suggestion, but it's late... :coffee I'll be thinkin' about it, though.

Re: "embossing" a logo on a chest piece
Although that could work...it would be very thin and after being painted probably wouldnt stand out as being raised up.
Here's what I did last year...
Sculpted a Bat emblem directly onto one of my chest pieces... molded it directly ontop of my chest piece and removed the mold once it was set.
I then removed the clay from the mold and cast up a latex bat emblem. When complete the emblem just glues down to the chest piece and it's raised up...:)
I have pics showing the sculpt and mold but I cant find them...sorry.

Re: "embossing" a logo on a chest piece
Patrick,
David is definitely correct about just painting latex being too thin and not giving that "embossed" look. If you don't want to sculpt a logo and cast it as David suggests, you can get the thick "foamies", their about 1/4" thick. for your logo. Bevel the edge on a scroll saw. you can then latex and plasti-dip the logo.

Re: "embossing" a logo on a chest piece
Wow, good ideas... I actually was thinking of paint-rolling on several layers of latex... but I think I'd like to try it the way David suggests. it sounds like I would get a much cleaner effect doing it that way. But in case that doesnt work for me, what are "foamies"? I'm not familiar with those...
thanks!

Re: "embossing" a logo on a chest piece
Cool... if I were to use foamies, how easily could the foamies be made to conform to the contours of the chest piece, like the separation between the pecs, and like say, where a bat's tail would come down below the pecs, etc?

Re: "embossing" a logo on a chest piece
:huh Ummm... I'd say it's one of David's... Believe it or not, David does SOME sculpting of his own... Although I hear he's really an architect ( :up For all of you Seinfeld fans out there...) David does amazing work himself, he really doesn't need to buy anyone else's chest pieces... I think foamies are really flexable, kinda like a thin mouse pad, so you can just glue it down in between the pecs, and there it'll be... Just an idea.
