That means a lot coming from you bro! :up The suit I'm putting together will be a hybrid and will utilize a few licensed pieces and some custom stuff. I wish I had a better digi cam, cuz these really do look much better in person. Sounds strange to hear someone say that about a licensed piece... :lol The only trouble I'm having now is that the edges of the forearm armor aren't staying glued down that well. I may either try a stronger glue or change to attaching it down with velcro. Not sure yet... nondisclosed_email@example.com (KnightStix)Mon, 26 Jul 2004 11:47:25 +0000 UPDATED PICS ON PG. 2 - Licensed Glove mod progress pics. - Forearm armor - Fast, easy, and cheap!https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1797983,from=rss#post1797983https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1797983,from=rss#post1797983Awesome Work!! :up :up Good tutorial too!! Here we go. The finished piece! Sheet metal & foam forearm guards, resin fins, & studs on the palms. I hope you can see what's going on here - the pictures aren't that great. Photographing things that are all black with a cell phone cam is pretty difficult. Here is a before shot of the original licensed glove: First of all, I have to say that the guards I made that are pictured on the first page of this thread were small - they were done to the measurements taken from the licensed piece itself. Thanks to our brother L.T. Chu ("the law man" ) who sent me some templates, I now have guards made to the correct size (don't worry bro, I'm still gonna take care of you :up). They look MUCH better than the first ones! These were made exactly the same way, just larger. Basically what I did was strip the glove of its color down to the bare grey latex with some acetone. Then, in order to add the resin fins, I had to cut a 3/4" wide strip out of the bottom of the gauntlet because the holes left by the rubber fins were not spaced the same aas the resin ones - it would've looked like crap! Then, I took some pieces of scrap leather (thanks to Ed Farrel for those - I told you I'd find a use for them :up), and glued them about 1/3 around the gauntlet from the middle "seam" on the palm side to the edge of the raised armor piece on the top side. Then I cut the holes for the resin fins & glued them in (all gluing was done with either DAP WW Contact cement or Super glue). Before gluing the leather piece down, I sprayed the glove with two fresh coats of Plasti-Dip. Here is the sheet metal/foam armor piece & resin fins w/the leather "patch" on the freshly Plasti-ed glove: Another view to get a better shot of the armor: Then, I picked up some metal studs for the palm side. I didn't have a stud setter, so I just crimped them on with a pair of pliers - use something to protect the top so they don't get bent or scratched. Now, I know they're not perfecly spaced & aligned, but I was limited by the locations of the existing faux studs cast in the latex, so I placed them directly on top of them. Here is the pic: So there you have it. With some creativity, a little TLC, and some time, some of these licensed pieces can be made presentable. I'm really pleased with the way these turned out - they sould last me at least until I have the resource to pick up (or make) some really nice leather ones! Now to finish the right hand glove & we're all done!nondisclosed_email@example.com (KnightStix)Mon, 26 Jul 2004 10:59:08 +0000 Re: Licensed Glove mod progress pics. - Forearm armor - Fast, easy, and cheap!https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1797981,from=rss#post1797981https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1797981,from=rss#post1797981Thanks for all the supportive comments folks! That means a whole lot coming from you. If not for the encouragement you and many others gave me in another thread posted several weeks ago, I would have never bothered trying this. I am really fired up about how these turned out. I'm even thinking of some boot armor done this way. I can't believe how inexpensively and quickly these came together! Thanks Jerry! Believe me when I say that you won't recognize your old licensed Returns cowl either when I'm done with it. I've done a bunch of mods to it already, but none that I'll post pics of yet. When I'm ready, I'll do a step by step method behind the madness post again.nondisclosed_email@example.com (KnightStix)Wed, 02 Jun 2004 09:22:34 +0000 Re: Licensed Glove mod progress pics. - Forearm armor - Fast, easy, and cheap!https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1797970,from=rss#post1797970https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1797970,from=rss#post1797970WOW man those almost don't even look like the ones I sent you. Davidnondisclosed_email@example.com (DAVIDYR1)Wed, 02 Jun 2004 09:07:54 +0000 How to Make Metal Forearm Guards for '89 Gloveshttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1797968,from=rss#post1797968https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1797968,from=rss#post1797968As many of you know, I'm starting much the same way most of you did by modifying some crappy licensed pieces. I'm working on a Returns cowl and some '89 gloves. Yesterday, I made some forearm guards to cover the junk on the gloves & thought I'd pridefully share some pics of my very first custom pieces. The armor is made very simply out of self-adhesive craft foam and sheet metal. I measured out the armor area on the glove & drafted that onto the craft foam. Next, I cut it out with a very sharp utility knife. Then, I traced the foam piece onto the sheet metal and cut that out with a pair of sheet metal snips. After cutting, I used the dremel with a grinding stone attachment to smooth out any rough edges/burrs. Next, I took my hammer, found a flat spot on the concrete in the garage, & lightly tapped the edges until everything was nice & flat. Once this was done, I painted the sheet metal piece with some black gloss Rustoleum. This is what it looks like: Before adhering the foam piece to the metal, I sprayed the foam with 4 coats of Plasti-Dip. I then peeled off the backing & stuck it to the metal piece. Next, I bent the metal to follow the contour of my arm. This took some effort because the sheet metal, while pretty thin, was fairly stiff. I just used my fingers & shaped it until it was right. This is the finished piece painted, plasti'd, adhered and contoured: Here are some before and after shots of the glove: Before: and After: To be truthful, the armor piece in that last pic is not permanently attached; it is just balance on the glove to give the idea of what it will look like when finished. I'm not sure if I'm going to actually glue the piece down, or use velcro to attach it. Suggestions? Makes a huge difference, doesn't it? Anyway, I'm sure this is old news to all of the seasoned veterans here & I'm sure I'm not the first to do it this way. But, I'm really pleased with the results & I'm extremely proud that I did this all myself. This will hopefully be helpful to all the newbies like myself. This should give us all hope, cuz if I can do this, anyone can. The whole process (not including drying time between paint and plasti coats) probably took me about an hour to an hour and a half. I believe the Foamies were less than a dollar a sheet, the sheet metal was about 6 or 8 dollars for a small sheet, the Plasti-Dip was around 5 or 6 dollars for the can, and the Rustoleum was around 2 or 3 dollars. The most expensive part of this were the snips which cost me about 8 bucks. For my next project, I will be removing the rubber fins & attaching some resin ones that I got off of e-Bay. I'm making these gloves as nice as I can so they'll hold me over till I can afford to get some really nice ones. So there you have it - my first custom pieces and progress pics!nondisclosed_email@example.com (KnightStix)Wed, 02 Jun 2004 08:35:30 +0000
