How to Make Metal Forearm Guards for '89 Gloves
As many of you know, I'm starting much the same way most of you did by modifying some crappy licensed pieces. I'm working on a Returns cowl and some '89 gloves. Yesterday, I made some forearm guards to cover the junk on the gloves & thought I'd pridefully share some pics of my very first custom pieces.
The armor is made very simply out of self-adhesive craft foam and sheet metal. I measured out the armor area on the glove & drafted that onto the craft foam. Next, I cut it out with a very sharp utility knife.
Then, I traced the foam piece onto the sheet metal and cut that out with a pair of sheet metal snips. After cutting, I used the dremel with a grinding stone attachment to smooth out any rough edges/burrs.
Next, I took my hammer, found a flat spot on the concrete in the garage, & lightly tapped the edges until everything was nice & flat. Once this was done, I painted the sheet metal piece with some black gloss Rustoleum.
This is what it looks like:
Before adhering the foam piece to the metal, I sprayed the foam with 4 coats of Plasti-Dip. I then peeled off the backing & stuck it to the metal piece.
Next, I bent the metal to follow the contour of my arm. This took some effort because the sheet metal, while pretty thin, was fairly stiff. I just used my fingers & shaped it until it was right.

To be truthful, the armor piece in that last pic is not permanently attached; it is just balance on the glove to give the idea of what it will look like when finished. I'm not sure if I'm going to actually glue the piece down, or use velcro to attach it. Suggestions?
Makes a huge difference, doesn't it? Anyway, I'm sure this is old news to all of the seasoned veterans here & I'm sure I'm not the first to do it this way. But, I'm really pleased with the results & I'm extremely proud that I did this all myself. This will hopefully be helpful to all the newbies like myself. This should give us all hope, cuz if I can do this, anyone can.
The whole process (not including drying time between paint and plasti coats) probably took me about an hour to an hour and a half. I believe the Foamies were less than a dollar a sheet, the sheet metal was about 6 or 8 dollars for a small sheet, the Plasti-Dip was around 5 or 6 dollars for the can, and the Rustoleum was around 2 or 3 dollars. The most expensive part of this were the snips which cost me about 8 bucks.
For my next project, I will be removing the rubber fins & attaching some resin ones that I got off of e-Bay. I'm making these gloves as nice as I can so they'll hold me over till I can afford to get some really nice ones.
So there you have it - my first custom pieces and progress pics!

Thanks Dave! That means a whole lot coming from you. If not for the encouragement you and many others gave me in another thread posted several weeks ago, I would have never bothered trying this. I am really fired up about how these turned out. I'm even thinking of some boot armor done this way. I can't believe how inexpensively and quickly these came together!
Thanks Jerry! Believe me when I say that you won't recognize your old licensed Returns cowl either when I'm done with it. I've done a bunch of mods to it already, but none that I'll post pics of yet. When I'm ready, I'll do a step by step method behind the madness post again.

Hey Knightsix,
We're all here to help. This board has helped me in more ways than one...we all started somewhere and the important thing is to not get discouraged. You're off to a much better start than I had when I made my first movie suit...like I said...looking forward to more on your suit and it's modifications!

I agree 110% with David, it has been a long time since I've seen a thread like this. Knightstix, you did GREAT work fixing that glove up so far. I can't wait to see how the finished piece looks, and the cowl too! :applaude
