I hava a question... is it possible for you to cast the costume parts in a much softer material? Just wondering. It would make things a lot easier and probably help poseability, especially if the underlying figure has good, stong joints.

I actually rubbed some paint off Bruce's cheek on the 89 figure trying to get the cowl on.

I understand completely if you're unable to use another material, but it definitely would be cool.

My little brother has this cool toy ball thingy, called a stretch ball, a bit like these:

Which is made of a super soft, super stretchy rubber type material. It would be the ideal thing for a 1/6 scale batman toy costume, I think. It would be super-easy to put on the costume, especially the cowl, you could do the "push your whole head through the mouth-hole" thing with them and best of all, with a good strong ball-jointed neck, you could pose your figure's head and it would hold its position! Would make for a very expressive figure.

In fact, to go off on a tanget, I think it's also the ideal material for a rubber movie cowl - again, you could push the cowl back like a hood (like a "flesh cowl"), have super mobilty... AND design it right and you could also have some eyebrow movement/facial expression, almost like a prosthetic. Seriously, I think if you're going to have a rubber cowl in a big budget movie you may as well go to the effort of having it move with your face a bit. Give it a more "alive" look and more expressive, like the cartoon and comics (and my avatar). I seriously don't know why no-one's done it.

I get the impression that this stuff, whatever it is (I wish I knew exactly) is softer and stretchier than the "flesh" cowls some people have.

Luke, I sell those "Inside-out balls" where I work. That kind of rubber is impossible to keep clean. It would probably also need something more rigid underneath to support the ears and brows. Other than those 2 issues, it might make a nice material for a cowl IMO.

Well, for a movie those things wouldn't matter. You're right you'd definitely need to reinforce the ears or they'd wobble ridiculously, and if keeping clean is a problem you might be able to thinly coat it with some other kind of rubber.

With prosthetics, they have to use a new one every day, so with a cowl of this kind of material, even if you had to use a new one every day... I think it would be worth it for the benefits it would bring.

I guess for an action figure that exact material would be unsuitable, but there must be something else that's fairly soft and flexible that would be more suitable for a toy and would stay clean. Perhaps the stuff David's flesh cowls are made of would suit a costume for an action figure?

Lujho,

Luke, the main problem that I am facing in chosing material is my production run is too small. :frown Making the costume parts in soft vinyl is most cost effective way I can think of for a small run cause those copper moldings for making vinyl is the cheapest kind of moldings in toys productions (though they are still expensive for a small production pull). :p

As for the vinyl material, I can order the factory to make it more thin and soft to get the best movabilty of the figure but then the Suit would looks filmsy and will be unable to hold the shape well, so I decided to use the kind harness for my 89 Figure.

As for the 89 Cowl, I admit that it is a little more tight then I have planned. The 89 Figure is my first project and I have no experience in making something like this before, that is the best I can do at that time. But I can assure you that this time the Keaton head can get into the Returns Cowl easily as I have worked out some technical problems with the vinyl factory to get things improved. :wink

I agree with you that using Flesh material to make a action figure cowl will be great if it can be done, I'll try to talk with David to see if it is possible to use this on my coming Begins Figure project. :lol :mail
