Burlap Molding Question

I know the other day we were discussing body casting using burlap and letting it soak before putting it in the ultracal mixture. Would the same thing apply to making the mold for a cowl? I may have everything finished up by this weekend and can do the mold. If you can soak the burlap strips in water, how long and cold or hot water? (That last one is probably a stupid question.) Anyway, just thought I'd bring it up.

Warren,

I'm not sure what you mean, let it soak. What I do is but a Beauty coat of ultracal on the sculpt (about 3/8 " thick) and when it just begins to harden I start adding strips of burlap soaked in mixed ultracal . I add a second layer of burlap soaked in mixed ultracal then when that begins to harden I add more ultracal giving me a good inch thick mold. Hope that helps.

Warren, I'm pretty sure they meant soak it in the plaster. You are supposed to get it supersaturated with plaster when you put it on.

Yep..that's exactly it. Like Ed and Brad said. The only reason I know this is one..Bob Dullam and Ed have mentioned that to me and Ed loaned me a video on molding. You simply take your strips of burlap, dip it straight into you bucket of mixed ultracal that's it. Although if I oversoaked it..I ran my fingers down the soak burlap some.

Btw..I am doing the same thing right now :wink

actually, if you soak the burlap in water before putting it to soak in plaster, it will open up the cell structure of the burlap.
