Mold Making Problems & Solutions
Alright...I bought everything for my mask, molded it, and did everything up to where I applied the plaster.....then it all went to hell.
The plaster wouldn't come off, so I had to resort to chipping and ripping pieces off, which also ripped off a large chunk of the front of my mast. Most of the oil in the clay had evaporated out of it or was absorbed into my fingers so it was basically useless, and I had to scrap the whole thing. So all I have now is my lifecast. Basically, I'm just trying to figure out what in the hell went wrong.
Some of the things I can figure.
I didn't spray paint the clay as some people noted, and I figured maybe the spray paint would have allowed the plaster to come off easier.
I couldn't seem to get the lumps out of the plaster. The first side I aplied the plaster to never really dried and had lumps all over it. It didn't really smoth out into a paste, it was more like damp crumbly dirt. That side never fully dried.
The second side went a little better, but still had lumps in it. It was more paste like and dried almost instantly. But the main problem was, neither side came off the clay without taking the clay with it.
So I'm wondering if it was because I didn't mix the plaster right, or because I didn't spray paint my clay that messed me up. Or both. Any comments would be GREATLY apprecieated. Thanks

Re: ....help me please
Okay first I must say I'm sorry for your loss....
1. yes you NEED to spray your CLAY... either with krylon crystal clear (a clear coat) at least two coats... or some people use PAM....
2. It sounds like you mixed the plaster wrong and not well enough... ALWAYS in my experince you must add your dry plaster to the water not water into the plaster.... I use almost like a wire strainer to sift my plaster into the pre measured bucket of water... As far as mixutre goes I'm not sure what kind of clay you are using...
Sorry again and I hope thid helps.

Re: ....help me please
thanks, and that does help quite a bit. I was adding water to the plaster instead of the reverse. But I suppose it's all part of the learning process...I just need to come up with another 40bucks to replace my clay now :banghead
Oh and my clay was an oil based sculpty, the bake hard in the oven kind, I grabbed that so it wouldn't harden if I left it out like water based clay would.

I never really thought of PAM, but then I was watching a repeat episode of CSI and there it is...they were molding a factured skull and used PAM to help with the mold.

Re: ....help me please
Instaed of sculpy clay, try getting Klean Klay or Castilene... it's way cheaper than sculpy Klean Klay is like 2 bucks a pound here in canada... and you can reuse it easily... glad I could help.
