Smoothing Latex

I hope this is the correct forum to post this. I have several cowls that have little bumps all over them. I want to smooth them out before I attemp to plasti-dip them. Can anyone share some tips on how to smooth out the bumps? :huh

Thanks!

Are they subtle little bumps or are they like skin tags your Aunt Marge has, hangin' off the loose skin of her neck? :lol

If you have a Dremmel drill, use the drum sander or the little cutting bit very carefully, after you trim it with an X-Acto knife. While the latex is still raw, it's very easy to trim, you just need to make sure you don't leave any damage behind, that'll show through the Plasti-Dip.

If it's for an '89 cowl, you don't need to go crazy and make it ultra-smooth, since the '89 was meant to be rough in appearance.

If it's a Panther cowl, yes... You want to make sure all those skin-tags and lumps are gone.

So, that's what I did to my '89 cowl. More experienced guys will have more to add.

Good Luck! :up :)

These are actually all store bought cowls (unfortunatly). I have one that is an 89, one that is the Rubies Sonar and one that I think is a Rubies Panther style. Most of the bumps are just small pimple type bumps. I was thinking about trying to smooth them out and then plasti-dip'n them. The best of the bunch is the Sonar. It must have been an early pull or something. The whole suit is nice, just needs to be cleaned up a bit.

Thanks again!

Be very careful with your dremel then, the latex on those is pretty darn thin (one of the reasons folks started making their own way back when).Dremel makes a little nylon brush attachment that may be more to your liking. Like echo said thoughm make sure you don't wind up with a bigger mess bu dremeling right through the piece. Check the back side and make sure a nuggy on the outside doesn't line up with a low spot on the inside or you might just wind up with a big hole in your mask. Afterward you can scrup it down with a rag soaked in laquer thinner to smooth out where you just ground the piece then wash it off with some soapy dish water rinse and let it thoroughly dry before spraying the plasti.

     Good luck.
