Ive heard of heating tools that can trim or cut latex neatly. Is there such a thing? Any links?

On fairly thick latex (slip, a.k.a halloween latex) use a belt sander with about 120 grit. Stretch inside curves flat. It will "plane off" the scissor cuts.
What you might have heard "might" be a reference to using a flat end soldering gun to smooth out edges on Foam Latex. Big difference in materials. In the making of Batman and Robin, and in the making of Spiderman books there's a picture of some fx shop folks doing just that with foam webs, and a Batgirl piece.

Good info Bob... is there a heat version of an electric knife that will cut (melt through uniformly) slip latex like it does foam?

Not that I'm aware of. Although there's always a new technique that someone somewhere will come up with. It's always about whatever just works. The sanding technique will work with any hard rubber as long as you have a long flat hard surface behind it. I also have used it on urethane pieces to clean up edges, and thin the edges from underneath.
On polyfoam an old technique is to cut it with an electric carving knife. You can cut through large chunks of polyfoam that way, and very cleanly. One thing some of you might try as an alternative to polyfoam for backing rubber skins (latex, urethane, silicone) is reticulated air filter foam. The beauty of this is that it BREATHES. It will keep you much cooler in the summer. Its a little scratchy, but lighter, and more long lasting than polyfoam.
The soldering gun thing will only work with foam latex. There are other methods for getting clean edges as well. One is to have a really tight fiting positive/negative mold. That is what I do. I take care to make my edges as clean in the sculpture as any other area.
This summer I will be taking video, and stills of some costume making techniques. And Jay, (mrbats) will be putting them up on the website.

there are electric heated cutting tools for styrofoam. basicly a wire with current going through it. wouldn't work on latex though.
