I am pretty positive that that really clean Sonar suit was a re-cast of Bob D's Sonar Statue. I have a picture of Bob's sonar statue and they are identicle, right down the black cape.

To me, from certain side angles, showing the flatter chest, it looks more like the Six Flags stunt suit.

The statue in the pics looks like the Dullam statue on display at Morris Costumes in Charlotte and being that only one was supposedly made......

Re: Sonar Suit Pics...

well, you're all correct on this. except I made two statues, not one. I think you are looking at what Gerry M. ended up with a few years back, and you are also looking at a re-cast of my sonar statue. My statue got re-casted without my knowledge or consent almost 10 years ago. I have seen copies in magazines, and on numerous websites from all over the world. This guy is Germany. I was on a family vacation a few weeks ago in Gatlinburg tennessee, happened opon the "cars of stars" museum - and beside the 89 car what do I see --- a copy of my sonar statue, done by the late Bob Butz who apparently was selling copies of it himself in his 70's (I talked to the owner). Long story short was I made two for morris costumes, Wb wouldn't let them sell it, so I gave one to phil morris, and one to someone else I shouldn't have, and the rest as they say is history.
for years this used to really bother me. sometimes to the point of making just furious, the thing went out like a train with no brakes. Then as the years went by I have gradually learned to not even consider being re-casted an issue. I is a fact of life. In a way it is sort of a complement. If so many people went to so much trouble to get this thing, I must have done a pretty good job, and I am proud of that. So my current attitude towards re-casting is - I don't care one way or the other. Fretting over something you can't control does no one any good. And I don't have the time anymore for stuff that ends up with me banging my head against a wall. I have progress shots of this statue, and sometime I will post them for the curious. Also I would like you to see the paint job that I did, not the cheezy paint job that was done on every single re-cast.

Hey Bob, I'd love to see in-progress shots. I've seen a few pics of this statue over the years, and it always looks awesome, but I would be very interested to see pics of the one you painted, to see the difference.

Do the re-casters at least give you credit for the original sculpt or do they just claim it as there own original?

Ok...now I'm pissed Bob!!
You were in Gatlinburg Tennessee and didn't even call?? Man...that's like 35 minutes from my house! :whack

You know...I had totally forgotten about the statue in the car museum, took the family over for a day around 3 years ago and snapped this pic while we were there.....that was before I was big into costumes and didn't even know who Bob Dullam was.......just now put 2 and 2 together.... :doh :doh :doh

Sorry DT, I though you were more east. Wish I woulda known.
Here's a shot of the original I did 10 years ago. Notice the gloves have leather wrinkles and texture, and the re-casts do not. The guy who first re-casted it had a fellow by the name of Dan Gates, who I knew by mere co-incedence sand off the detail on the gloves.
here is a copy from me, painted by me. Notice the difference.

I also have a video tape of me working on this piece in my garage. I will transfer it to digital and post excerpts from it on the new website, along with a detailed synopsis of the whole story.

I don't know why, but I think it looks better without the cape...

Great statue, though, Bob!
