Replica 89 Batarang

Has anyone actually made a John Evans replica of the Batarang. How do the three hinges work the two end and the middle i beleive he said Bungee cord. I have pictures and of course have seen the movie but would like to see it closer and has anyone else managed to pull of a complete replica and has anyone made one from carbon fibre. Stronger and lighter than steel ive heard. Speak to me buddys a dream is forming. :batfly

Re: Real Batarang

No,but it has crossed my mind more than once.
Dave from Mattel said he held the screen used one and studied it a little. The idea of small hinges came up and I thought it might work with rubber pieces either inside the body of the rang,or attached to the outside.
Dave pretty much confirmed it was in fact rubber pieces glued to the front and back of the rang at the seams,as opposed to metal hinges. Now,what kind of rubber, how thick,or EXACTALLY how and where it attaches,I do not know.

Here's a scan of one of my 89's. To the best of my knowledge,it's accurate to the screen used rang, but this is the back, which is why it's flat looking.
I scanned it and cut the size exactally in half,so if you save it,double it's size and you'll have an accurate template.

Excellent John, thanks for the pic. I'm planning on making my own replicas for my costume.

Do you have a pick of the front side by chance?

Oooohhhh... I've got'ta buddy who can cut stuff outta steel... Although the real 'rang might be made out of something else, I think steel would work for it. I'll probably try and make two, one that splits, and one solid one. The entire concept of what Bats used the 'rang for in the first scene of '89 is entirely possible... I may have to try it...

Good times.

I cant quite tell what your trying to say... are you saying that the ridge running down each wing is a hinge in addition to the ridge down the center? It seems that way in the movie stills, but I cant completely tell.

Maybe some kind of hidden "leaf spring" like springs can be used in addition to hinges to make it open up by itself.

Look close at the scanned pic from the book. You'll clearly see the separation of each part and also how they're cut and shaped. The outer piece sort of fits into the inner piece and allows it to fold smoothly.
In the screen caps you can see how its folded. Again, according to our friend Dave, the "hinges" are actually rubber. He didn't go into enough detail to fully explain how it was put together or how it works, but he definitely said "rubber".:lol

Maybe you can figure it out. :wink
