I would suggest that for a more long lasting joint that you make the outside of the fins a separate part of the mold(difficult to put in words, I'd have to draw a picture) then gel that part, glass it, then trim it back, slop on some resin on the edge, and clamp it into the rest of the mold. so you do this while you are glassing the rest of the car. REAL critical is that once you start glassing you should not stop until it is done. If you press your finger in the resin, and its completly dry -- You're done. Other wise over time what will happen is that if the pieces flex any, you will hear little cracking noises, then eventually it will separate. All that laminating resin and gel coat stuff will not make a chemical bond once it goes completely dry. nondisclosed_email@example.com (youngbat)Thu, 19 Aug 2004 17:52:07 +0000 Re: batmobile questionhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804142,from=rss#post1804142https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804142,from=rss#post1804142young bat, i already gave the whole thing thoughts, i worked on plans for 4 yearw hile reading up on building cars, the windshild, willb e custome toold and made of glass, by a guy i know. the body will be fiberglass and very thick, i want to be able to walk all over the car without seeing bending anywhere. the chassies will be a donor chassis and extended by my bro in law who is a profesinoal welder. the batmobile is around 22 feet long which is close to the leanght of some hearse my dad owned and i drove, i will also shorten my full scale car about a foot or 2, so im not to worryed there. there will also be hydrolics on the car, to rasi it up when driving, for such thigns as speed bumps or drive ways that go form flat to angle in a instant. the way im making the full scale is kinda like my 1/4th, but insted of casing it im gonna cover the whole thing wtih some fiberglass, flip it over and gut it and lay down more fiberglass inside, then flip it back over and carve in detail then cut out sections. later on if wb lets the copyright on it slip i might cast mine the real way and sell shells. i got ever swtich in the batmobile preforming an action in or on the car. the back vents area will kind of slide up then open in 2 halves side ways to a back window, on the sides of the canopy on the car body are panels taht will flip up and have side view mirrors for driving, the guns, (which a cop siad if he saw would be a bad thing) will shoot paint balls for fun, the doors on them wont be like the movies, i dont want them flying off, so isnted it will fold open in half. theres a lot more i have planed for the car tht would take a long time to write, lol. so ill just say when the car is doen ull see how much there is, but i also plan to build a cacoon for the car, naturle not a working on, more like a protective shell that can be placed over the car when not in use. (shell will not be portable) nondisclosed_email@example.com (sg1star)Thu, 19 Aug 2004 17:50:21 +0000 Re: batmobile questionhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804141,from=rss#post1804141https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804141,from=rss#post1804141you are one talented individual! good luck!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Jack Knight1979)Thu, 19 Aug 2004 14:39:30 +0000 Re: batmobile questionhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804140,from=rss#post1804140https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804140,from=rss#post1804140thanks ed! i've been looking allover for that site.nondisclosed_email@example.com (BatDemon)Thu, 19 Aug 2004 13:26:43 +0000 Re: batmobile questionhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804139,from=rss#post1804139https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804139,from=rss#post1804139Here is a site where someone is using the foam method http://www.k-tune.com/k-chin/index.htmlnondisclosed_email@example.com (BatcaveHq)Thu, 19 Aug 2004 12:04:19 +0000 Re: batmobile questionhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804138,from=rss#post1804138https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804138,from=rss#post1804138The fins are an issue that I have given some thought to and it seems they would have to be made separately in halves. Like you said, lay-up we be close to, if not impossible there. There are different ways of going about it, (yes, we are getting a little off topic, I know...) You could make the whole rear in separate pieces and then splice them together or you could make just the fins in separate pieces which would have to be attached later. This picture shows the rear being made in separate pieces. -Tim nondisclosed_email@example.com (1989batmobile)Thu, 19 Aug 2004 11:51:45 +0000 Re: batmobile questionhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804137,from=rss#post1804137https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804137,from=rss#post1804137I too shared the same dream only with the "other" car.   Some points about the 89' car you will want to consider if you haven't (just in case).  The windshield on the original was curved, not just a flat piece of lexan bent around from left to right, but curved from top to bottom.   If you use polyester resin you must be mindful of gradual warpage particularly of areas that stick out without much mechanical support such as fenders.    Better if you can make a chassis that is ground up rather than pilfering two GM frames as they did in the original (time was an issue there). The big thing is that this thing is 141 from axel to axel. hit a tree with this, and your front end will be touching your rear end. Chassis design on this will be hard because the lenght of this piece and the basic design will make it easy to be twisted, i.e. going over a bump or small hill can easily twist the entire car if your chassis isn't built correctly. On a movie set, or theme park this is not an issue.    two ways to cast a finished shell. one is the canopy, then the rest of the car, the other is do the front and the rear separately. This can be disasterous if any warpage, or the mold gets sprung because of the weight of itself.i.e. the two halves won't line up.    You want the body to be thick enough to almost stand on. this also gives a good impression opon being up close to the car.    Drafting the mold is tricky on this piece. certain areas can easily form mechanical locks which will make gettin the mold off a real headache.    This car is huge. 400 sq. cubic ft. That would be the amount of resin, and glass you will need to cover it. then the mold will be even more. Your mold has to be extremly rigid otherwise the integrity of the shape will be compremised.    Also to consider is how you will cast the two fins on the back. Think of reaching in a mold with your arm and laying in gel coat, and glass. Ain't gona happen that way. you got less than a foot of space.nondisclosed_email@example.com (youngbat)Thu, 19 Aug 2004 10:27:44 +0000 Re: batmobile questionhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804136,from=rss#post1804136https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804136,from=rss#post1804136the car i saw shortly after the movie came out(89) had the wiper running on a track system. functional or not? it looked to run from side to side(linear) not in a radial fashion loke conventionl wipers. i forget what the onstar car had,if they were changed. headlight wipers would work, you'd probably need 2 pair running from the top.nondisclosed_email@example.com (BatDemon)Thu, 19 Aug 2004 09:00:23 +0000 Re: batmobile questionhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804135,from=rss#post1804135https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804135,from=rss#post1804135wel when i do these, they most likly will be filmed, if so then i plan to upload them to my site.nondisclosed_email@example.com (sg1star)Thu, 19 Aug 2004 05:26:45 +0000 Re: batmobile questionhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804134,from=rss#post1804134https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1804134,from=rss#post1804134Oh man!
