Checked out "Mystic Smoke," which comes in a tube, is sticky, depends on rubbing and doesn't put out much. The KNO3-sugar compound sounds unwieldy, risky and impractical with cooking and fusing. There's also something in the magic industry called a "utilities smoke cup," which requires striking flint and slow-burning gun cotton; doesn't sound right. So I've ordered the Special Effects with Fire and Smoke manual, which includes how to make the "Ninja Exploding Smoke Bomb" with 'smoke powder,' and also covers other popular magicians' smoke methods over the years. When the book comes I'll post any particularly relevant instructions or pics.
Added by 6/19/05 edit: The Fire and Smoke manual describes the Ninja Exploding Smoke Bomb identically to Spiderfan11's opening post on this thread.
