Re: BTAS grappling hook gun..anyone want a mold?

I had a similar experience happen to me recently on a dagger mold i did. Rather than trash the mold I am using it till it burns out and just sanding the ridge clean on the casting. Lots more work than a piece requires if the mold worked out right, but better than wasting the time and materials. However if someone here were to buy the mold from you it might be worth recouping the materials cost so a new mold can be tried again.

Re: BTAS grappling hook gun..anyone want a mold?

Yeah, had the same thing happen on a knife, they're usually much easier molds to make, so I don't sweat those too much, I know my buddies will always be up for a slightly "off" mold. This is just a bunch of material and money.

Been thinking about it all night, still not sure what I'm going to do with it. It'd be one thing if I had a ridge, that'd be no problem to fix, this will be a nice big ugly dent over the length of the back of the handle, as well as a spot or two on the front, all of which will be under the hand on film, so I can live with that, but for any other use, ugh, just hideous. Maybe I'll cast one, open the mold and keeping the casting stuck on the "plug" side, remove the outer portion of the mold, then just try a case mold approach to pouring a new silicone piece. Of course, that would require a bit of sanding/patching to be done without having the same thing happening again.

 :cussing

I wonder if brushing some solvent onto the overlap area will soften the second pour enough to sand it away or something like that.

Well, in any case, the barrel's got to wait until after court and a birthday party later.

Wish me luck.

Yeah Tom, quite a plate you've got right now. Since failures usually outnumber successes at first, and since there're sure to be more refinements, why not model-putty and sand over the dented and blemished spots? Then paint. You'd still likely have something decent enough, so go ahead and drop it for now and enjoy the party.

almost the last update, really.

http://www.clevelandfx.com/images/grapgun/grapgun7.htm

barrel's 3/4 done. Hook and spool are the last two tiny things remaining to be molded, and they're going to be one piece block molds. If I don't have to work tonight, the mold will be DONE by 5 am EST tomorrow (5/5/05...is the world going to end?)

I'll cast one up, get a hook done, shoot some more pics and video of the thing in action, then go back and finish all the detail work like painting.

Email me if you want info on getting one. tom AT clevelandfx DOT com

Tom

PS, they had me go to court and gave me a WARNING?!? :whack Thanks for wasting my time... no more numbskulls in government please!

well, silicone wasn't fully cured yet, so mold's not done, so I patched up the hook and cast the handle.

The "seepage" isn't that big a deal, little bit of cleanup and it'll be OK, so not selling the mold after all.

The casting isn't that bad at all, ten minutes with some bondo and sandpaper and it will be glass smooth again. No one will be the wiser once its cleaned and painted.
