Making a Working 89 Batarang - Pics Start to Finish
I've been wanting to do this for a long time now and since it was brought up last night,I started finally.
I should be done later today or tonight with the original and ready for molding by tonight or tomorrow.
My question is for the molding experts...
The piece is made from Super Sculpey and I want to mold it and make a resin copy for strength.
I have access to Smooth-on rubber molds(I think rubber,maybe silicone?) and Smooth-on resin. I'm not sure what else is available near me,but I can definitely get these items today if I need them.
Would I need mold release as well and if so,do I put it on the original piece first before molding? Actually,if there's anything specific I need to know or have when I begin?
I'm not a complete idiot,so I understand the basic process,but I want to try to get it right the first time,so any help would be great.

John,
I would seal the original with spray paint then all you need to do is basically pour the silicone (2 part mix) over the sculpt and let it cure. (both I and Lou use Polytek 71-20 silicone, it's a 1:1 mix and very easy to use, they're in either Maryland or Penn. I don't remember for sure but you should be able to get it in 1 day from where you are) Then you should be able to pour resin into it without any release agent as well. The only other thought I have is you may want to glue the original down to the bottom of your mold box to keep the silicone from running under it. I often glue things down to a foamie sheet and build a clay wall around it to make my mold box. Then you just peel the clay away and pull the mold off the original and there you go, a mold. Try and make it at least 1/4" in any place too. Good luck.

Thanks Ed! Good advice as always.
And thanks for the compliments guys. I'm finishing up some details and it should probably be ready for molding tomorrow. I could of finished it tonoight,but I got tired of looking at it.
Gonzalo and Lewis,I really don't know how to do this,nor do I know what I'm doing. I'm totally making it up as I go. Apparently,making a Batarang isn't that difficult,but getting it to work is another story.
I have a couple of ideas,but until I get it molded I won't know if it'll work. The whole experiment could come crashing down around me and years of research will be lost.:lol

you're on the right track, that's for sure. I'm not quite sure what type of hinge setup they used for the movie, but I would have attempted to figure that out before molding, just in case you need a thicker casting to make it work. It'd save money in the end, not to mention materials.
I've used GI-1000 from silicones inc for tons of molds, a few of them have involved super sculpey. I didn't bake it, just poured the silicone over it. Had a couple odd reactions, nothing bad involving the mold, the clay just seemed to dry and crumble. if you're using silicone and not degassing it (removing air from it after mixing) get a comfortable chair, sit back and pour it into the lowest spot of the container in a pin sized stream, this will help break up any air bubbles.

I'm not familiar with quite a bit of smooth-on's product line, but if you're using a urethane rubber to mold it, YES mold release everything, and you might want to seal the clay first, then mold release it, the container you have it in, urethanes are used as an adhesive sometimes, and will behave as one when you're not careful. I just used some brush on 40 for my green lantern prop, used mold release and still had sections of the paint stick to the mold.
Be careful, mold making is addictive. :wink

As much as I would LOVE to think a folding rang could work as it was intened to look in the movie im not so sure lol Im sure you could make a hinge of some sort that would work but you would need to use all your years of research to make it work :lol If u look at the way the light hits the back of the rang as he is pulling that bum towards him on the roof you can see the flat side and it has no line or indication of a hinge. Thats just my observation but I would love to see this really work :up
