I could be wrong but, some spear guns run off Co2 . . . I'd think this would be easy to modify as they are usually made of aluminum.

Re: C02 Powered grappling gun... do any really exist?
What if we went off the assumption that the line rewinder was a part of the suit? The 'grappling gun' just shoots the line up, and then the motor on the suit takes over. Kinda like what you were saying Nitestar. Maybe the cable itself is stored coiled on the suit as well and the gun just launches the end? Maybe the rewind motor was the belt. It seemed that was almost the concept they were going for in 89 when Keaton pushes a button on his belt, and the motor in the belt brings forward the grappling gun, which then simply shoots the line up, is attached back to the belt (or motor) and the belt winds the line up. Maybe this kind of idea would give enough room for the line shooter and motor.
Just brainstorming.

Vittorio. I like the idea but if the cable snapped then the whiplash could leave a dent in the codpiece!
If we assume the suit has power then the belt could also have a CO2 supply, which means the actual grappling gun could be just a launch platform.
Take a look at this harness. It is ideal for this sort of idea.

In the real world they are making miniture pumps that compress and pump air under pressure. The air then powers motors for running, lifting etc. They could be fitted to a hand held launcher and also to the belt/harness to power the lift.

Take a look at this and tell me it couldn't be modified to fire a grappling hook and line:

Re: C02 Powered grappling gun... do any really exist?
probably could, but everything I've ever read (no hands on with them) says spear guns are very unstable out of the water. I would have to guess that a front heavy hook might help that a little, but don't know for sure.
if a bunch of bat fans are mulling over the idea you can be damn sure that the military is already looked at, or is currently looking at it, especially in today's "urban warfare" day and age, something like this would make sense. Crap, they're already looking into exoskeletons.
You want to see where the future's really at, check this out "human like" robot hand now you scale that up 1000%, give me a waldo input suit and build the rest of my giant robot and we're talking.

Did anyone see the crossbow that Kevin Costner used in Waterworld?
It's not gas powered, but it would work. :up
