Plexiglass '89 Boot Armor - Pics
Hey all... I got a set of boot armor from Matt AKA Jawafive last week, and I loved it, but it got me to thinking how could I improve on this? I wanted the leather look for minimal funds of course, and I came up with a way that was so inexpensive and easy!
I went to the hardware store and found some 1/8" plexiglass for under $5.00, used the armor Matt sent me as a template, and traced it out onto the plexiglass.
Using a utility knife I cut along the top edges with a straight edge. Always use new blades, the sharper the better for this. After breaking away the excess I had this as a start.
I then took an over sized mailing tube and 1 thumb tack and tacked the piece onto the tube. Using a heat gun and an oven mitt, I heated the plexiglass until it started to bend, molding the bottom to the round surface of the tube.
I now have a contoured shin guard that I will take to my work and grind down the edges until it is the right shape. I plan on using spray adhesive, an ink roller, and some black leather to surface the shin guard.
Will keep you updated with the progress, and may even offer to some brothers out there :up
Well here is a pic of the shin guard after I ground down the excess and contoured it a bit more with the heat gun.
I decided to use a stretch leather that I got from some womens boot uppers I bought from the local thrift store ,once again very cheap. Here is what it looks like with the leather on.
