I've always wanted to buy that series on dvd- but could never bring myself to spend the money in case it stunk.

Don't they get changed into their suits in the back seat of the Batmobile (which is nothing more than a regular car)?

that's how they did it... of course with a little editing it was about as quick as Adam West sliding down his pole :huh wait, that didn't sound right. :lol

Though I did not like the slurs against the Japanese, the 1943 serial is very enjoyable!! Lewis Wilson did an admirable job as Batman and as Bruce Wayne, and I loved Shirley Patterson as Linda Paige!

Indeed, I consider Lewis Wilson's portayal as a major inspiration for me personally.

Bless all of you for your comments.
OK, this movie is on my shopping list.
Most likely to me it'll be a funky part of Bat film history! B movies rock anyway.
The cowl slanting up towards the temples has a bat vibe all its own.

Remember that in 1943 Japan and America were close to war. Batman served as a propoganda film, just as Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes defeated nazi plots in the same era.

Close to war?

Umm... they were at war.

No offense on the correction. :wink

But back to topic!

Does anyone know how this compares to the 1949 serial?

My two cents...
I bought these a long time ago on VHS and even though it's 'what it is' for it's time I still couldn't watch it. Those serials always ended with a cliffhanger. Well, the cliffhangers were always Batman and Robin getting the $hit beat out of them and being almost put to death. If you suck that bad maybe you should do something else. They never won a single fight until the end where they finally overcome the villain. Watch it with a huge grain of salt (and maybe some tequila to go with the salt).

I thought the 1943 serial was more interesting than the '49, though there were some good things about the latter serial. In 1949, we were introduced to Commissioner James Gordon, and both the 1949 Robin and Vicki Vale are alive and well today.

Thanks for the correction. History was never my favourite subject.

I think the old serials were great entertainment. I didnt see many of the Batman ones but King of the Rocketmen was by far my favourite.
