'89 Batmobile Voice Remote Prop

Is there any good info on this thing out there?

I have the Anton Furst sketches and screen grabs from the film BUT a while ago I came across some photos claiming to be the actual prop. However looking at them they just don't seem to line up the film used prop. Also stylistically speaking the prop just doesn't look like the rest of the 89 prop lineup.

Sadly it looks like the final prop deviated quite a bit from the sketch unlike most of the film's prop were VERY close to the initial sketches.

Here are the images I've got that are worth a damn.

I've been curious about this too. I've seen one of these come up on ebay a couple times. It doesn't really match the screencap too well. The only thing I'm thinking is that maybe the top area that he's speaking into pops up from the housing that he is holding in his hand. That would make sense based on the concept sketches. It's hard to say from the pictures but it's just a thought.

those pics could be a prototype, but they don't look like the real deals that I've seen...I know that I have a pic of it somewhere, I'll try and locate it and post it once I find where it is

Re: 89 Batmobile Voice Remote Prop?

The way I understand it, there are 2 of these original props in collectors' hands. I have one of them. It looks like the pics above. It doesn't show up definitively on screen, but i first saw the remote in an auction house lot of production items from the 89 movie. I will try to find the catalog. At the time I didn't know what it was.

I later saw one trade hands on eBay a few times, the one describes as more complete, yet I believe it is missing the mic section that folds out and is seen above. I won it on its last sale.

Again, as i understand it, the prop above is indeed the Voice Remote being used the screen cap shown. However, the design sketch up there is for the Driving Remote, which is used by Keaton to steer the Batmobile into Axis Chemicals to drop the BatBomb. The final prop for that looks fairly close to the design, including the round screen and antennae, but is a bit different in orientation and simpler-- it also has a visible 3-digit counter and is probably what Reeves is thinking of. But it doesn't have a pop up mic like seen in the scene above. Pics of it have been on the net and in some of the foreign publications.

Then there is also a fancier silver remote without a screen, but with a 4-digit counter that is seen in lots of the movie pics and I think sits insde the BatVault door with the other weapons, and is also seen in the pic with Day Murch, but I don't know where it is actually used in the movie. I used to think it was the voice remote, but it also does not have a mic that sticks up.

I think they used my prop in the scene but later decided it was too ugly and plain to go into the vault door, etc. and made the new silver one to replace it. or they used the wrong one when filming. Just my thoughts.

I wonder if PJ's sketches showed anything?

I am going to step through the movie tonight.

Great info Thuth!

The silver device in the vault door is the time bomb.

Here is all the ref I have on this item so far.

Image

I THINK it was Senior Wares that recently had a bunch of 89 storyboards up for sale and said that in those storyboards it explained what the timebomb was going to be used for, but he never gave any further details.

I'm dying to see any other photos that you guys have on this (or any other obscure 89 props). The design work on these props is soo classy looking. Luv that Furst.

Best

Nick

Re: 89 Batmobile Voice Remote Prop?

Nick, thank you for your appreciation.

It is a weird piece, but all of the '89 props are a little weird looking and none match each other very well.

I re-watched both Batmobile scenes and it looks like the Voice Remote is used in both.

He speaks to the mic both times, and you can see in the screen cap above that there is a little part that sticks up out of his glove. That mic part, is missing from my prop, but you can see where it goes and how it folds up and down on a hinge. Also, the size, depth, and profile of the rest of it is consistent with the pic above and the ridges that are visible.

The Driving Remote has no such piece that sticks up straight. The antennae piece is curved. You can see it in the Vault door pic that Nick posted and I have seen other pics of it that are more clear. It is a great looking prop, but i don't think you ever see him use it.

Here's a mockup of the vault door that I recently put together.

Image

I don't think that the voice remote was in the vault though.

The bottom left object is the "handset tracer" and the bottom right object is the "Tranquelizer Gun" attachment.

Which item are you refering to in particular?

I have been describing the Handset Tracer.

I thought that it was the incarnation of the sketch for the remote, but i now see they are discrete.

Good thread, Nick.

Also missing from the vault door are the bolo and the large unfolding grapple hook (which I think is pictured in your last pic in the upper right highlighted page), both of which also have screen time in the cathedral scene.

Then there is one other prop that was produced that i can't figure what it is. It is round and black with a red center that looks like a button. It might be the bolo from a funny angle-- I'll try to scan it in.
