Latex or Urethane - Strong Odor
I just got a brand spanking new batman cowl. It has a really strong smell to it seeing as how it was just recently made. I tried it on for the first time and after about 30 seconds the fumes seemed like they were getting to me and I had to take it off. Will this problem get better with time or will it always smell this strong. Is it safe to wear? What kind of experiences have you guys had wearing Bat cowls.
Thanks!
-Jason M

Re: Wearing latex or urethane Batman cowls
Hmm...I have a full latex Begins cowl from Luda, and even though I can smell a distinct latex smell if I really try, there's no obvious or overbearing scent to mine. Then again, I'm not sure how old this cowl is, so its possible that its had a long time to air out...

Yeah, I was hoping it would eventually air out or something like that. I've got my fingers crossed.

Re: Wearing latex or urethane Batman cowls
You could try powdering the inside with talc or other such fine powder, it should help soak up any residue from the manufacture, and make it easier to put on.

Re: Wearing latex or urethane Batman cowls
I think that if the person who you got the cowl from is a cigarette smoker that could be the problem...I never get a a bad odor on the cowls I pull, I mean there is a slight "rubbery" smell , but it goes away after it's pulled and exposed to the air for a few days...I'm guessing the same thing will happen with your cowl :up

Re: Wearing latex or urethane Batman cowls
I have a urethane belt that stunk up a whole room when i first got it. I've had it for a couple of years now and it does not stink at all. I think it took a a couple weeks for the smell to go away when it was fresh out of the mold. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Re: Wearing latex or urethane Batman cowls
Jason, is it a urethane cowl or latex? Do you know what brand of material it was made from? They'll all have their own kind of smell or another, but latex usually is the most tollerable of them all. The smell of latex isn't anywhere NEAR as bad as fresh urethane. And then different brands of urethane are worse than others. The smell will linger far longer, depending on the thickness of whatever it is (Belt, Cowl, etc), as well.
I got one of Shawn's cowls when he fist made them and it hardly has a smell to it at all anymore, where it was fairly strong at first, but nothing intollerable. I actually liked it, compared to the smell from a urethane belt I got earlier. Uncle Ed's cave is pretty overwhelming with the rubber smells, but that's because he's got at least two of everything.
E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G!
Urethane holds it's stink way longer than even silicone. The smell from silicone isn't really bad either. It just weighs a ton.
You could always wash the cowl off (inside and out) with regular liquid dish detergent and after it dries, rub in some talcum powder on the inside, like ninjaq says. But that'll more help you with getting it on and "masking" the smell, rather than soak anything up.
Over time, it'll decrease in smell, but it'll never go away completely.

Re: Wearing latex or urethane Batman cowls
I have a urethane cowl, wich had a thick layer of baby powder on the inside and out.
The outside was wiped with armor all.
The urethane itself doesnt smell anything, I belive its Vytaflex 30 urethane, like the cowl you have.
So my advice, aswell. Would be too baby powder the inside abit, and let it be that way, till it wears off.
I always put a bit of baby powder in my urethane cowl before i put it on, they useally slide on alot easier that way.

Re: Wearing latex or urethane Batman cowls
Sounds like urethane to me. I wash mine in warm soapy water to take away some of the smell. It'll always have some rubber stank though.
As far as being safe to wear....I don't think anyone really knows for sure about any rubbers. Probably safer cured than not though. And occasional wearings are most likely ok. It's kind of like all the great things if life....moderation is key.
