Re: Plasti-dipping my Begin's suit
Sounds like we've got a winner. Mineral Spirits it is. Thanks guys.
Next question.
The Cowl.
The cowl is currently the same dark gray color that the rest of the pieces are. I want to plasti dip it and make it the same color that I'm making everything else. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about this, what with the ears and all.

Same process, the ears don't make the finish any different.:wink

Re: Plasti-dipping my Begin's suit
There won't be a problem with too much overlapping?
Well come to think of it...probably not, I'll just have to make sure to smooth out the runoff.
Thanks Brin.

Re: Plasti-dipping my Begin's suit
My advice for Plasti-Dipping a cowl would be to set it on a stand of some sort in the middle of an open space so that you have access to all sides of it. I use a huge piece of visqueen in the middle of my garage with a cowl stand I made out of a paper towel holder and a styrofoam ball. That way you can get an even spray all around and control it a little better. Just spray it the same as you would anything else...
As a general rule, If you want that shiny finish, spray it thick and even so that it is shiny, but not so thick that it drips. For the matte finish, spray lighter coats from about 12-14 or so inches away. In either case, build it up slowly enough so that the propellant has time to escape so that it doesn't get trapped and leave little "swiss cheese" holes in your dried Plasti-Dip. If you spray it too thick too fast, you'll have a bunch of holes where the bubbles escaped while it was drying. The voice of frustration and experience there...

Re: Plasti-dipping my Begin's suit
Thanks, thats really helpful. I noticed the air bubbles on my thigh pieces, which aren't as much of a deal, but now I know that I rushed it a little too much and thats why they're there.

Re: Plasti-dipping my Begin's suit
Nice work dude.
be sure to do a test peice on something befor you do your suit.
if you hae the can to close you will get a gloss finish, if you have it to far away you will get a matt finish, so you will need to find a range that matches the finish you want.
or you can just re spray the whole chest.
looking great dude :up :up

Re: Plasti-dipping my Begin's suit
Thanks guys! I'm glad I started this now instead of later, because the amount of time it takes the Plasti-dip smell to go away is...well, lets just say we wouldn't want to do this the night before I had an appearance to make.
And yes, its turning out great, I promise I will post fully suited pictures as soon as I finish plasti-dipping.

Re: Plasti-dipping my Begin's suit
Whew!
So, I got my extra plasti-dip, and started right away on the chest piece. Man, that was a bit of work.
But, it went from this:
to this:
This being my first experience with Plasti dip,
I made a few mistakes, and thus have a bad, bubbly texture on some parts, but I'm smoothing those out with mineral spirits. It still looks 100 times better than before, even with the bumps, and I owe it all to you guys.
I'm gonna suit up later today with my best friend, who's in the process of improving a spandex Superman costume.
