Cowl Nose Holes

I just got back from the SDCC and while perusing the Profiles in History booth I started to examine the bat cowl they had on display. Get a nice up close look at the piece of foam rubber artistry reminded how much I hate the look the of the nose holes found on the movie cowls.

That goes especially for the 89 cowl who's nose holes are just two little round holes and create an almost cartoon pignose effect. At least the later nose slits are a bit more elegantly sculpted.

That being said I was curious who here has the more "movie-accurate" nose holes and who had left them off in favor of a cleaner and meaner look.

I don't have them yet but I'm thinking about adding some. I'm going to decide after I were my cowl for a few minutes.

I would love to add nose holes in my cowls, i know i sound like i have the worst sinus infection ever and breathing thru' your mouth for 6 hrs gets old, but i dare not cut for fear of screwing up!!
Does anyone have suggestions or a tried and trusted method?

If you want to put in nose holes with out fearing of screwing up the cowl, use a soldering iron. Get it nice and hot and poke it threw. Or drill it with the drill bit of your choice.

I used a Dremel with a small cone-shaped grinding stone. I marked where I wanted the nostrils to be, then bored a small hole at that point & then just ground out the edges until they were the size and shape I wanted.

My understanding is Keaton's Returns cowl had a loose bottom nose flap, rather than nose holes. Maybe somebody can confirm or disprove this.

I've always made triangular nose holes that follow typical nose anatomy. That is, rather long and narrow right triangles, with the verticals along the inner boundaries, and with about 1/4" of cowl material between the holes. I use sharp cuticle scissors to cut or expand the holes, as well as to cut other cowl vents.

Of all the verifiable pictures of surviving '89 cowls I have seen, half of them did not have the "flap" with nose holes at all, but were open at the bottom.

I don't know if the flaps were added to the close-up cowls or were cut out of the action-orient (stunt) cowls.

Even in this pic you can see a faint line outlining the flap which leads me to believe it might be a seperate piece.

this looks like the scene where batman is holding jack's hand and "drops" him into the acid...

Re: Bat Cowl Nose Holes

I've seen 2 89 cowls up close and they both had the nose "shelf" with holes...I have seen other pics of screen used 89's with out the shelf, and in addition to the missing shelf they were also missing the chest plate indent that was usually attached to the cowls...I' wondering if those were throw aways or actually screen used. :huh
