Creating a Master From an Existing Mold

I recently got a cowl mold and I'm looking to make a master from the mold. Problem is... I don't know jack about doing it, and the archives don't say much about making a master from an existing mold. I'd like to make a master so I can clean up all the flaws and then re-mold it so it is a perfect cast of the mask.

Any help would be appreciated. :up

Ryan,
You have to pull a good thick copy, clean it up, silicon mold it, then make a hard (resin) copy, clean it up more...make another silicon mold, then cast in urethane.
Simple.

What material is your mold made out of?

Is it a silicone mold or plaster/Ultra-Cal mold?

Ryan, do lots of thin coats rather than one heavy coat of latex in that mold to minimize the shrinkage. After you pull out the thick latex copy you'll want to pack it full with something to help it hold it's form.

If you don't mind sacrifcing the original mold, why not fill it full of resin then bust the plaster mold off of it? There's no way you could do permanent damage to the resin even if slamming it with a 2lb. sledge. If you're not going to need the plaster mold, screw it!

well I'll try brin and Ed's way first. I'd rather keep the plaster mold just in case. but thanks for the help. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

Before you start to spend 100's of dollars on silicone and other material/supplys.

My advise would be to sculpt a brand new Clooney cowl instead.

Because the cowl will end up getting smaller than it already is if you do a latex casting and mold that to make the fiberglass master, Not alot smaller but it will be noticeble.

Markus speeks wisely. Inevitibly the end product WILL be a bit smaller. Could be the difference between a wearable cowl and a display piece.
