Apoc's Functional Batsuit 2007
Many thanks to good Bros who have helped make this latest functional Batsuit happen!
- Brin Londo co-designed and made the extensively vented Apoc Cowl. Included inside are 10 of my e-K armor elements plus foam rubber padding; AO reflective, anti-fog safety lenses; Samsung Bluetooth communicator; PSA 8000 electronic listener in an ear cavity; and a miniature electric fan and battery pack. After designing and testing various swiveling schemes, Brin and I decided not to attach the cowl to the cape or chest piece, thereby allowing fully free rotation. Lenses may be removed in the future to provide even more airflow. 5 lbs.
- DAVIDYR1 provided the leather torso that I custom vented and supplemented with 52 added epoxy-Kevlar® armor elements, e-K Bat emblem, and belt loops to keep the Beatty-Keaton-style utility belt on the chest piece. 13 lbs.
- Nitestar provided the '89 gloves; supplemented by resin fins from J-a-n-t-y, my own e-K arm guards, and Hatch Kevlar glove liners that abate sweat and resist heat up to 750° F. 2 lbs.
- J-a-n-t-y let me use his '89 urethane utility belt and Panther knee guards. I molded and cast the buckle in e-K; then added a latching seatbelt mechanism, metal compartments, metal hinges, and metal cylinders. Also molded and cast the knee guards in e-K. 5 lbs.
- Artsee1 provided latex Returns shin and instep guards, from which I molded and cast e-K shins and modified, hinged e-K instep elements with Uncle Ed's skillful help. 4 lbs.
Other functional suit items:
- Nomex® fire-retardant and chemical-resistant cape, including aluminum front rods, patterned after Rubies design and tailor made. 3 lbs, with Nomex fabric being the same used in the Begins flame scene, from Pegasus Auto Racing.
- Nomex balaclava made by Simpson.
- Nomex racing tights from RG Racewear of the UK, with the leg tights underneath leather pants. Besides fire and chemical resistance, the Nomex tights are excellent for sweat abatement underneath both the vented leather chest piece and back-vented leather pants from International Male.
- e-K thigh and knee armor. 3 lbs.
- Internal, vented Kevlar cup from International Jock. 0.5 lbs.
- Water repellent, back-zipped and lightweight superhero boots from allcostume, plus added thick and gripping soles. 3.5 lbs.
Total Weight - 39 lbs.

Zane, that's fantastic. Gives me inspiration towards coming up with some sort of weird hybrid batsuit in the coming year. As far as latex goes, the thrill is gone. :)
Keep up the great work.

Re: Apoc's Functional Batsuit 2007
It's great to have your words, Bros! Brian, now that Brin has done this brutal cowl, we've got a suit that really works all the way around.
EB: Yeah, a big goal is to stay scary, not look nice.
Bruce: You can express your own dreams with a hybrid, instead of being especially locked in by movie tradition - including by the screw-ups they obviously make! Go for it, Bro, and make it work for even the football test (sans cape). Who wants to jump into only a cosmetic costume that makes it hard even to climb stairs? That's getting older and duller all the time.

Re: Apoc's Functional Batsuit 2007
Intense and kinda scary.
Actually, tres scary.
My only suggestion would be a mouthgaurd, similar to the ones used by the Samurai.
Would protect his mouth, plus have perhaps an air filter, and perhaps a mic/voice changer?
It could be removable..but as its a fully functional suit, i figure it could be a cool addition.
Just a suggestion.
and Wicked awsome. Its kools to see that the suit could be pulled off and work exactly as its supposed to.

Re: Apoc's Functional Batsuit 2007
What a sick suit! I love it! I think the cowl is the most badass part. The back is almost evil-looking.... what do you recommend on lenses, if we want to put them in our cowls? And anything special to keep them from fogging? I am sure you would brawl in that & make the other guy cry when he breaks his knuckles....
--- Warning- contents under pressure. Do not open without eye protection. Keep away from open flame. Refer to user manual for compatability with other products. Do not remove this tag under penalty of law!

Re: Apoc's Functional Batsuit 2007
Thanks Mel! We need something to hold off your CREEPY Joker.
TB25: A mouthpiece, like what boxers use? Actually, the Bat needs to be quick and skilled enough to avoid hits to the jaw. The suit goes on and off quickly; and I'll probably use only the Nomex leg tights with internal armor pockets, in the future, rather than leather pants and external armor. The tights are cooler, lighter, more efficient, and have no risk of getting the armor torn off.
Hunter: Welcome to the cave! Yeah - weird and creepy, and definitely evil to crooks. You can get lenses from these glasses:
http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/nuvograyaflens.html
And this is good defogging spray:
http://www.joediveramerica.com/page/JDA/PROD/mskess/506
But I'll probably go back to fine black mesh, or no eye covering, to improve air circulation through the cowl. And some guy did hurt his hand when slugging a similarly e-K armored chest piece.
