D3O Functional Armor

It looks more and more like d3o (pronounced 'd-three-oh') is on its way to superseding ceramic, Kevlar, and epoxy-Kevlar body armor. This is because the new d3o:

- Is easily moldable to any shape, and then processable to hold a given shape - so excellent for armor elements.
- Hardens to strong ballistic resistance, for both blunt and sharp speeding objects, within thousandths of a second upon impact.
- Is relatively lightweight.
- Provides excellent resistance to both penetration and shock, all in one.

So functional armor elements could even be shaped as musculature, and contained either under tights or inside tailored Bat-wear. Here are some interesting links on d3o, with the first link in turn tying to 14 others after playing it.

Hats off to British inventor Richard Palmer and his UK company that makes d3o!

' very cool news, indeed
It's impressive the US Olympic Ski Team
used it in their suits. If they only knew the market potential for a BLACK ski suit...

There is also a link to the products page of the d3o site.

' For more information check out www.d3o.com or contact
Charlotte Gough, charlotte@d3olab.com, +44 (0)1273 739410 '

They dont really sell to the public but if someone was going to make this into suit parts I'm sure they would supply the raw product.

Right, TJ, I had liked your thread and have since done more research into d3o.

Secondly, following your suggestion, I've spoken with Charlotte Gough and after signing an NDA will be e-mailing her about promotional uses of d3o with Batman hobby armoring.

Thirdly, what's particularly fascinating is that d3o may enable casting into armor that really would make this Batman 1989 conception a reality - with the same feel, flexibility, weight and everything. The key would be the ability to harden d3o into the armor elements upon casting, and I'll try to investigate with d3o Lab on how the hardening process can be catalyzed.
