Re: The elusive cape harness
The flaps on all the older cowls[except the Sonar/Ice suit, which had no flap] are latex coated canvas added later, and were not sculpted onto the cowls in their original form.
All the suits use cape harnesses, new and old. It is a MUST,and is the only way to assemble them properly and get them balanced with the rest of the suit.
The flaps were fused onto the underside of the cowls with latex, perfectly cut to fit into the oval cavities and line up with the holes.
Canvas is very thin, but very strong, especially coated with latex, which also makes it stretchy,so every advantage is there. It sits flat, where a latex flap needs to be thicker for strength,so the same 'sandwich' effect couldn't really be achieved.

Re: The elusive cape harness
I totally agree John, theres no better way to do it than this way.
Looking at the Clooney suit you really wouldnt think its done this way although if you think about it, clips would just add all the weight to the neck and you would constantly have to fight it.
Its amazing what secrets these suits hold regarding construction lol
Thanks again for the time you put in to this, its why Im here :up

Re: The elusive cape harness
This is the best pic I have showing the Canvas connection area. This is a Returns cowl.

Re: The elusive cape harness
I wish. I forget where I snagged it actually.
That symbol in the corner usually means its from Ebay though.

Doing my part to resurrect the original thread and rehosting some great images on imgur. These should be in the order they were posted:

I'll do what I can but am sadly no miracle worker. Some are just lost or behind private logins now and without the original poster's help, we may never see them again. Heck, even in those cases, if the OP would email the pics to me, I'd be happy to rehost them!

Re: Cape harness tutorial with photos.
Hi all,I'm brand new to costuming and don't have any experience with this type of work yet - I'm fairly handy and good with tools, so I think I can manage, but like I said, brand new to this.
Anyway, my question is, I have an Artsee1 cowl and chest piece that I would like to try this technique with for my '89 suit, but I'm not sure how to put holes in the latex without causing damage.
Can someone help this newbie out with some guidance? Thanks! Sorry if this question is already answered somewhere else on the forum, but I couldn't find it.

Re: Cape harness tutorial with photos.
Welcome to the board! Holes in latex are best done same like on leather belts, with the help of a punching tool. I recommend to glue a strong textile on the back on the piece using latex before you punch the hole. Best member here to help you with questions and with fantastic props and costume pieces is Artsee1 himself, Paul is a great guy and lives in the US. Good look with your costume! You will find Paul on Ebay and on his website. Maybe also try to contact him via this board.
