Returns Glowing Weapon Prop

In Batman Returns what exactly was that blue glowing thingy that Batman tossed at Catwoman when they were having the rooftop fight?

Re: Batman Returns Glowing Thingy?

She runs her talons over the whip-lifeline. Meantime
with his free arm, Batman reaches into his bat belt and
pulls out a plastic mini-test tube with a blue fluid on
top, red fluid on the bottom, separated by a thin barrier.

           BATMAN
           A "he-man"? Sure. They shine
that beacon in the sky, then wonder
what hole I crawl out of.

           CATWOMAN
Wow, a real response and you're
not even trying to get into my tights.
But explain me ... If you're
so down on "them" out there, why
bust your bat-buns to protect 'em?

           BATMAN
I just can't sleep at night.
           Exploding department stores keep
           me up. One ...

He snaps the tube. As the blue seeps into the red and
the tube slowly glows purple ...

           CATWOMAN
           I can't sleep either, lately. A
           little link, between us. But
bottom line baby, you live to
preserve the peace, and I'm dying
to disturb it. That could put a
           strain on our relationship.

           BATMAN
           ...four, five.

He lobs the now-bubbling tube as Catwoman starts to sever
the whip. The mixture explodes against her forearm. She
SHRIEKS like a dying cat and soars down onto the next
     ledge, barely.

Batman leaps down, to her. Her talons frantically claw
and scratch as she tries not to plummet. Batman grabs
her, pulls her up -- for a moment, they're embracing.

           CATWOMAN
Who are you? Who's the man behind
the bat? Maybe he can help me
find the woman behind the Cat.
           (pressing armor)
That's not him ... Ah, here you
           are ...

Her talons poise at the edge of Batman's armor, just above
the waist. Suddenly Catwoman thrusts. Batman ROARS with
pain and fiercely swats Catwoman away -- off the building!

           BATMAN
           -- No --

He watches in shock as her body hurtles toward the ground.

CATNIP?

it was never on fire-
everyone SAYS it's napalm, but it so is not.
it's just an acidic mixture of two chemicals-
not a big deal and probably very illegal if you want to make a "prop replica" of it...

Yeah just fill it with electroluminescent fluid and run a battery to it! Simple!! And less deadly :)

Why not just get a blue lightstick?

Re: Batman Returns Glowing Thingy?

This takes some detective work, because scripts don't always accurately describe what's filmed and ultimately produced and released.

Back to jokerscrowbar's script reference:

"Batman reaches into his bat belt and pulls out a plastic mini-test tube with a blue fluid on top, red fluid on the bottom, separated by a thin barrier...He snaps the tube. As the blue seeps into the red and the tube slowly glows purple... He lobs the now-bubbling tube as Catwoman starts to sever the whip. The mixture explodes against her forearm."

Here's the device:

Image

(1) Note the operating part of the device glows blue inside a black cartridge. Maybe there's a "mini-test tube" inside the cartridge.
(2) There's no apparent red fluid, although it could possibly be masked by the blue, as indicated by the darker shade.
(3) In the movie, did Batman seem to break anything in the cartridge before hurling it?
(4) Nothing in the movie's cartridge glowed purple.
(5) The device hit Catwoman on the upper arm, rather than forearm - another small point, but an indication of changes from scripting.
(6) The device was obviously caustic enough to rip Catwoman's protective costume and burn her. Simple acid is not likely to glow blue; so perhaps it could have been napalm, ignited by a switch on the cartridge before Batman threw it?
(7) Hunterbat's speculation that the caustic agent might have been napalm is shared by other Bat Websites such as

http://www.batmannews.de/gotham_city_central/batcave/batkapseln.html

(8) But if napalm, wouldn't Batman use such a device for big explosive bursts? Hardly for a tightly confined burn, I'd think. So maybe it's indeed acid, as the script suggests, that Batman would ordinarily use for eating through resistive materials. And maybe a blue-glowing agent is added as a tracer.

Does only The Shadow really know?

i'm gonna go with bat-acid-

remember, his gadgets are designed to be so high-tech that we have no idea what it is or how to logically re-create it. it's simple, really-
the chemistry that allows something to glow is quite different than the chemistry allowing something to be caustic, and most caustic liquids happen to have barely any, if at all, color, let alone glow.
the glow adds to the mysticism and looks good on camera,
but remember that there was no flame, and it doesn't take much to burn through pvc cloth...

You're goin' right, polly. It's clearly liquid under pressure that bursts out of the cartridge. And Batman could've activated the acid cartridge between the time it's first shown and his lobbing it at Catwoman, because the movie views change back and forth. There's every reason to accept the script where it's consistent with what's filmed -- including breaking of the barrier between the two chemicals when Batman was off-screen.

Nitrobenzoic acid lanthanide complex
i.e. one thiophene-bis(oxazolinyl)pyridine ligand, emits blue light, glows red or green when complexed to europium or terbium ions.

Or:

A bit of black plastic with a glow-stick attached
