Molding Basics

Ok, so I'm really seriously considering making my own custom cowl. I have gone over the archives many times so don't just direct me to go there. I need opinions on some of my ideas - the sculpting part seems easy and I understand it.

The problem I'm having is grasping how to mould it.

I had an idea on plasti dipping my sculpt and then slipping it off and then applying liquid latex to it, then plasti dipping it again, but I have been told that it won't come off the sculpt in one piece and will be too hard.

I really don't want to have to do the dividing wall thing - I just don't get it and it seems too expensive and hard... Is there just some other way?

And an alternate to that idea - pouring liquid latex to the clay sculpt and slipping it off and applying plasti dip to it?

Also, where can I find spray liquid latex and spray plasti dip in Canada? I've looked hard for a while now and I'm not having any luck.

Also, does Krylon stick as well to to latex, plastic, wood and vinyl as Dupli Colour?

:help :help :help :help :help :help

:hey :hey :hey

Re: I really need some help for my Cowl

I'm not sure I follow what you first described. Do you want to plasti dip a clay sculpt, then try to pull the plasti dip off of the clay, and then pour latex into the plasti dip? Because that probably isn't going to work and will destroy your sculpt.

You don't have to use a dividing wall, lots of people do one-piece molds. Just coat the whole clay sculpt in ultracal, pull the clay out, and slush the ultracal mold with latex.

Latex needs moisture pulled out of it to dry properly. Ultracal works beautifully to suck all the moisture out of latex so it dries well. A material like plasti dip will not help dry out latex at all, since it's a rubber too.

Thanks, Heather! Where can I find Ultracal? Is the moulding process easy enough for a noob to be able to do it alone or should I just buy a premade cowl?

Yes, fantastic tutorial that was. As far as where to get the materials, the Monster Makers site doesn't seem to be working at the moment, but they offered a latex mask making package with armature, tools and sufficient materials needed. The shipping is very expensive into Canada however due to the poundage, looking @ about half a G in all. I'm going to begin my search for a vendor in Canada, if I find that, I'll narrow my search on the estern coast.
