Re: BTAS style cowl/mantle/cape
BING BONG IDEA
i noticed Lujho1's avatar
and it kinda resembles the BTAS
suit. it can be done. just find a cowl or have one custom made to look like the BTAS cowl
only with a leathery look to it and have the cape go over the the neck with a zipper
second idea could be to use what i would call the "daredevil approach" and have the whole thing made from leather with that cool facial feature that it has
like this
if done right you can also include the white lens...ah ha double postive
but this is just an idea

All good ideas - yeah, I forgot to say, you could make a cowl out of leather like the DD one (it's definitely possible)... OR like you say you could just sculpt (and possibly paint) a cowl to have the same leathery texture and lustre.
And yeah, the manip in my avatar is pretty much supposed to be a real-life version of the BTAS cape/cowl. In reality the seams would be a lot less obvious - in fact in a movie you'd never even notice them, and the overall effect would be something that looks pretty much one piece - or at least one piece flowing nicely into another.
Funny thing about the Daredevil mask - it looked so good that I assumed it was sculpted rubber made up to look like leather - there's just no way you could really get such a great, strong, sculpted shape with so little seams and do it for real with leather. But I later found out it really WAS leather! A single piece, with only a few barely noticeable seams!
The ways of doing a great, comic/cartoon faithful batsuit have been staring us in the face for at least 5 years, and the people bhind the movies just don't want to know.
Jim Acheson designed the DD suit as well as Spider-man - combine the techniques from those 2 movies and you get the perfect ways to make a batsuit - he really would be the right guy to do it.

Re: BTAS style cowl/mantle/cape
well i thought about the speration between the cowl the cape in your avatar and thought to decrease the whole "separation look" to use a Velcro style attachment or just go leather all together, i would guess it would be more comfy anyhow. hell you if i was working on A CONCEPT of a BTAS movie style suit, i'd do the whole thing in leather and escape the whole spandex deal. might post another topic about it, becuz i really like the idea

Re: BTAS style cowl/mantle/cape
Couldn't you do the whole cowl/mantle as one piece in latex and then attach a latex cape? Afterward you could fill and blend the seam permanently?

Re: BTAS style cowl/mantle/cape
Artsee's website has a pic where it looks like it's one piece, but I was never sure if it was or not. If I could get my hands on a cowl/cape in one, that would be my Holy Grail

Re: BTAS style cowl/mantle/cape
was the daredevil mask leather ontop of something else? Im would think it would have a helmet underneath or something, you cant get it to just sit that nicely without some form. And yea a batman that way would be cool. Maybe Bale will have more that look someday. His new suit was made so he could move faster as it is. Maybe eventually he will move to a completely new design again.
And luke, i think your avatarr bat is one of the coolest real world versions ive ever seen. Is that your costume? Its so sick.

Yeah, it was glued to a vacuformed plastic shell. However, there are methods of shaping and hardening leather so that it could have that form and stay rigid without being attached to anything else. DD probably used the best way though.

It's not real, just a photomanip. Original picture was of Bartram from Dead End.
Still, it could easily exist for real, as the examples we've been talking about prove.
Also, Racer X's getup in Speed Racer was kind of like DD and my avatar, covering a little more than the DD gear did and a little less than a full cowl like my avatar. I thought it looked pretty nice:
All throughout the movie I was thinking that having the entire jaw exposed looked really good and Matthew Fox's strong jaw gave it a real Batman feel. I really wish they'd have the guts to give us a Batman with his entire lower face revealed, like some artists draw.

Re: BTAS style cowl/mantle/cape
wouldn't be less expensive anyway
instead of all that hard work with latex or urethane
