Lining a Cowl

No cowl can really just slip on without using KY jelly in your hair or having some type of slick fabric to slide your head in with. I have done only the fabric method.

Basically I have a large enough piece of black spandex that I put in the neck of the cowl, which allows my head and hair to slip by without pulling out my hair. I don't know if anyone has a permanent lining installed in their cowls for this, or do they use a ski mask or something else?

I did buy a ski ninja mask, which is like Spider-Man's pre-suit red mask in Spider-Man 1, but in black. When I got my new cowl I realized I couldn't slide the cowl over the mask, but it was actually my face sliding by the fabric that works. So that idea was scrapped, just wasn't thinking.

Currently I am thinking to glue down the spandex in a few spots inside my cowl, so I don't have to keep putting it inside the cowl every time I want to get it on. I've seen cowls on display with what appears to be some kind of lining, but was never sure if that was for the display or there really was a lining in the cowls.

I was recommended to just do the KY method, but I'm not sure I want all the jelly in my hair and inside my cowl.

What do you guys do?

I just use water - that has worked pretty well so far as the test fittings go.

Now, I haven't had a haircut in a while, so I know that was causing some difficulty in getting my cowls on yesterday (just playing around, not suiting up yet) -- I imagine strips of spandex or other slick material would aid in getting the thing on your melon, sure....

What hair I do have is short, so that's not a problem for me. What is, is my ears. They stick out a bit more than average, so it feels like I'm ripping them loose when I put a cowl on. If I'm careful and stretch it out a bit at the sides, they go in without much problem. I don't really want to put KY on them, it would feel too weird.

I look at it this way. What is a little water based k-y if I know that by the time I am done costuming I am going to come out of the cowl and costume looking like I just stepped out of a sauna? If I am in the studio and want to do a size fit comparison I just use a sprinkle of baby powder and sometimes I put them on with nothing if I do not mind a few pulled hairs.

The inside of a cowl is gonna get miserable anyway and you are going to want to hose it with soap and water every time you use it any way so just approach costuming as Batman as you would deep sea diving.

well i thought too have a bit of fabric in the cowl might absorb some sweat and make you feel less gross inside. But i havent worn mine for long periods yet to really know.

even a short time in the cowl is going to leave you muggy and damp

I use one of these...

Helps with both the hair pulling and the ear ripping. Helps a bit with the sweat too I think. Only issue is keeping it in place and from being pulled over your eyes when trying to slide on a particularly snug cowl.

I use that skull cap too... It does help some, but I always just use a drop or two of KY. You don't have to smear it on thick for it to be effective... :wink :wink

Just don't get that "warming sensation" variety... At least not for cowls... :p

I've used water too depending on which cowl I'm trying to get on. Everyone and every cowl is different and what works for you is gonna depend on how snug the cowl actually is and your level of claustrophobia. :lol
