Authentic Begins Base Boots

I have actually known this a while but was hoping to do something tangible with the info before posting it here. I haven't really got around to it, and probably won't. Hopefully someone here will.

I had to scour the web to figure it out, since at the time no one had photographed the SKYWALK name, like Indakin has now. I think they might have sanded it off for the last movie, because even close up shots do not show it.

After scrutinizing probably 300 pairs of boots, based on the shots of the traveling show, I used the picture of the tread in the Begins movie book, to positively identify the sole by matching it to a low-res pic on a bootprint library website I stumbled upon while looking at boots. That has since changed but the pic is still online.

Here is the pic:

That crappy tread pic gave me the name SKYWALK for the soles. At the time, Google didn't have much to show, but after more digging I found Alt-Berg (or Altberg) as one of the few companies using SKYWALK, an Italian sole (I believe).

I am fairly certain that the original Begins boots were made by Alt-Berg, or made from a pair of Alt-Berg boots like this one:

The Altberg Field & Fell Original HMX...

Look at the boot pics on Batman Unmasked. You can see the shape of the toe is dead on, so they are using similar lasts to form the boot. Plus Alt-Berg is a long established UK company making all types of boots including police and paramilitary, which would fit with Nolan's functional vision.

I think the newer ones look closer to this one:

The McKinley Trek Classic Original

The sole, the Skywalk dual density sole, only matches when it has a full rubber rand, which many times this sole does not have.

Comments?

Nice work bro! That's one of the hardest parts is tracking down the base.

nice boots brin, what did you do to make them? What did you use for the simulated perferated leather? I have these plastic place mats that have a bubbled surface that when plastidip look like a close enough texture to work for modding my cheaper boots.

VERY nice find, Tony!

If it the manufacturer you've mentioned I wonder what their obligation to the WB is and if they would ever consider accepting a commission to make more. Kind of like the Indiana Jones wardrobe makers do.
