Carbon fiber for TDK suits.

Hey all, sorry,
I meant to post this here in the main forum in the first place. Now, this question is open for anyone but I'm hoping a certain functioneer(Apocalypton) will chime in with some sage advice.
I was thinking about the design of the dk suit, and I thought, why use any kind of latex or urethane? Why not just mold the armor ellements out of actual carbon fiber? Then it occurred to me that I'm not really up on the logistics of how to mold the carbon fiber.
Is it the same technique as the kevlar felt that Apocalypton uses? If so it shouldn't be too hard. Anyway, just an idea, one that I was thinking about trying.
Any info or advise is extremely welcome.

Carbon fiber is very different I'm afraid. It requires vacuum-heating. not the easiest thing to do in your garage

My plan for my TDK suit is to mold urethane backed by kevlar. I'd also like Apocalypticon to chime in.

sounds cool. just out of curiosity, why not just form it out of kevlar alone? again, just an idea. but actually, come to think of it, your way is probably easier. less sanding of the kevlar.

The urethane is blunt trauma protection (baseball bat)

It's possible to make epoxy-carbon fiber armor components by painting epoxy over carbon-fiber layers in a mold and letting cure.

Epoxy-carbon fiber

But disadvantages include weakness without vacuum forming and heating, and also that carbon fiber is an excellent electrical conductor. The Dark Knight would not actually risk potential electrical conductivity of any exposed carbon.

So until d3o or similar products become more commercially available, epoxy-Kevlar® is still fairly practical and easy to work with, along with flex Kevlar panels from a ballistic vest (dark blue, below) and mounted on a lightweight and airy motorcycle armor vest.

Good advise Zane.

Eden, take a look at this thread for the suit in Apoc's avatar - Apoc's Funtional Batsuit '07

and this one for his new belt - KL1 functional metal utility belt
