Re: Upgrading a Rubies Dark Knight Cowl - lots of pictures FIXED!!!

question: when you were gluing the hard shell into your cowl, did you have to cut it up to fit it? i found myself doing that for a better fit...

i dunno, i'm still a bit confused on what version of the cowl i have...it was marketed as a begins...and had that same velcro material in the back...v.2 maybe?

Appreicate the direction, I was considering a similar method for my rubies cowl. Really a big help, thanks!

Machina: I did have to cut the plastic mask - but only the ears. I found once the ears had been cut off the plastic mask went right in with no problem. The only thing I can think of that may have helped me (and may be causing you some trouble) is the changes I made to the stretch hole in the back. I don't see how this could be the case though since the face mask is so much smaller. Also, did you sand the plastic mask where you cut the ears? Maybe even sand down the sides a bit as well?

I used "The Dark Knight Adult Full Mask" (Rubies ID#4507) and "Batman Dark Knight Adult Batman Mask" (Rubies ID#3445?). I can't really comment on the Begins masks accept that they look nearly identical.

MAYBE A MORE EXPERIENCED BRO CAN ADD TO THIS?!

Samurai: You are welcome bro. I recommend doing this - it really helped the look and feel of the cowl (it kinda feels like a helmet now) lol.

Jason.

Sin03, Great job on the upgrade. The Rubies masks catch a lot of flack but as you have shown with a little work they can look great. Thanks for posting this.

Re: Upgrading a Rubies Dark Knight Cowl With a ton of Pictures

cool man thanks for the reply. yea i ended up sanding down the ears but it almost seems that my face mask a bit too big for my cowl. it's strange i know, but when i was at the shop comparing the marketed "dark knight cowl" as opposed to last years stock on the "begins cowl", i opted for the begins just cause it looked cleaner and also that it was kept im a more preserved enviorment since the store was a year round halloween store. when i found it, it was sitting on a mannequin head behind the counter with all of the more expensive masks. (still payed 30 for it, ha)

anyways hers a link to a thread that i started...still to this day i have no idea what version i have...

Unidentifed rubies cowl

Hey Machina,

I just took a look at the pics in your thread and I am almost sure, regardless of the cowl name, we have the same cowl. Both of our cowls have one really good cheek and a bad one that lacks the proper molded shape. Also, note the messed up eyes and the somewhat screwed up nose (I say somewhat because mine looked fine once it was on my face and looks even better now with the mask having been glued into it). If you want take a look at my cowl before I started work on it (pics can be found in the thread linked at the beginning of the tutorial).

I have no idea about V.1 and V.2 though I have seen threads on this topic in the archives (which you may want to check out if you haven't already).

That said, I think the problem may be with the plastic mask you are trying to insert into the cowl. I remember that my plastic mask sometimes had to be "straightened" (i.e. bent back into shape) - maybe it is slightly warped and needs some "readjustment" lol.

One question for you: where exactly is the mask sticking? Like is it catching once partially in the cowl or you can't get it in at all?

Thanks DarCat1530! My first project = great success! lol

My Bros: What do you think about my final points (ie. cutting the eyes, paint, and ears)?

Best,
Jason.

Well, like I said after I cut the heck out of the thing it fits sooo much better. From what I remember it was catching and sitting awkwardly around the temple areas... I'll have to post pics of it as I had finished the full conversion of it about a week ago.

I'll start a full thread about my suit tomorrow. I'm also in the process of converting the rubies adult chest peice and and belt as well...my goal is throw a batsuit together for under 200...and since I already have some of the gear, I think I can do it...so stay tuned in the next day or so :)

Hey thanks for all your help emoticon

Machina: No problem! Hurry up with those pics!

Okay bros one more pic of the finished cowl (I messed with the picture contrast a bit to help show the cowl lines and ridges better and don't mind the baby powder lol):

I've decided to work on the ears. After they were removed from the plastic masks, the ears needed some slight re-shaping. I still need to sand but here is what they look like now:

I still need to sand down the sharp edges and clean them up, but I think they should sit just fine in the top of the cowl. I need to get some model magic as well.

I'll post pics of what I come up with.

Jason.

Hey sin great work there. I think the layered look could work well if the paint you're planning on using for the plastic isn't too shiny. That way it would blend with the other mask. You know, I think I might have that same cowl with that same messed up cheek/eye. I've been keeping it around in case I get inspired for a project and don't wanna ruin a nice cowl. With that said, thanks for a great tutorial! Way to contribute.
