Batman Begins cape patterns.

Hey bro's.
I was looking through the archives section on capes and I think I've got a decent hold on how to create this thing, but just out of curiosity, what are your opinions on the sizing of the cape (How long it is ect.) and how many scallops there are (For a Begins/TDK cape)? How do you guys like to create your capes?

I ordered 9 yards of Black Velveteen fabric for mine. Thought I'd order a little more than I thought I needed just in case.

Re: THE CAPE!!!

Hey, don't worry too much about this. If you can sew, it's an easy project and really the size just depends on number of panels and how wide each panel is. If you make the cape it doesn't seem big enough, add another panel on to it. I made my cape with 6 panels and minimal scallops. I think it turned out great but it's really up to you as to which style and size cape you're going for. Here's a link to how I did mine.

Re: THE CAPE!!!

I've made a few capes already. My first design was like this, cut from a 4 way stretch velvet.

Image

I designed a cape that would look like the open spread wing Begins/ TDK cape, but scaled it down to not be over sized and dragging along behind me like it really would. Luckily I cut mine out nicely on a CAD table at my work. Here are pictures of my progress and then final cape together.

Problems you might see with the cape are the outer wing pieces... I didn't cut them in the correct direction flow of the fabric, which causes it too look a bit lighter black in some lighting (which I hate). Make sure you hang the fabric in the correct direction to avoid this issue.

Another thing which has both pros and cons. The cape isn't as huge like a Begins cape is. The massive cape is one of the features that this batman has and no other film version has. But the smaller cape allows me to move easier, not get stepped on, and because of the shape I gave the cape, my heels are clear from cape when I walk, and the outer parts of the cape are still long enough to cover the front of me a bit.

The effect of this spread cape looks awesome though, and the shape the begins cape has is like no other cape before, and I wanted that look which I haven't seen done by most.

After SDCC I decided to make a larger cape using Batnemos (i think) design. Basically its much fuller like a traditional bat cape, but the panels are not symetrical in shape, and still look like a bat wings, but squished inwards more. I don't have the patern on me, but this is how big this cape turned out. I used black moleskin this time.

With this design, when the cape is on my shoulders it barely touches the ground. When infront of me, if completely covers my body. Keep in mind I wouldn't make your cape do this if its velvet. I'd make it just big enough to almost touch but not.

Honestly for a Begins cape you should cut it more like mine or like the batnemo design. I really dont like the PIE shape cut above, thats not how the begins cape looks.

In the end I like my black velvet better. The dark black contrast it gives against the armor is so much more apparent then with the moleskin. I ended up buying more and im going to make a large cape with it now like my current mole version. I may trade off the moleskin version, don't really need 3 capes.

My philosiphy is depending on the event, where it is, how many people, inside outside... I'll pick either my shorter cape or my bigger cape. The large sweeping cape does look amazing though. I mean just look.

Maybe you should ask another caped friend for advice :rollin

Thanks guys! Indakin, that second cape really does look amazing. If you can dig up the pattern, I'd love to get a look at it for reference. Those shots from the Con are awesome as well! Great suits! Again, thank you guys, your advice is always appreciated.

Re: THE CAPE!!!

Cool, glad to have helped. I posted the design when I first did it a few months ago, but im sure not everyone saw it. I have illustrator files of it , if anyone would like a copy.

And send me and email to [email protected] for those who want either of the 2 designs, I have them at work.

KEEP IN MIND!!! I'm 6 2" , so thats how the sizing looks on me. When I first cut the template panels and fabric for the 2nd cape, i was taken back at how huge they were. Good thing about the velvet... don't really have to hem it, doesnt unravel. Bad thing about the moleskin... you do, and I still need to.

Moleskins alot heavier too, and the velvet is barely noticeable, and if I make a larger version with it, the cape should just flow so nicely.

Re: THE CAPE!!!

Indakin, sick capes bud. I love them. I have one of EastCoastBatman's capes and I think it is moleskin. I really like it, but I am considering doing another cape as well.

Can anyone show a pic of the back of Batman so I can see if the cape sags down at the cowl point, or does the cowl overlap the cape?

Thanks!
