Airbrushing spandex?
What kind of paint should I use? I'm going to be airbrushing some Eastbay tights. The only color I need is black.

Re: Airbrushing spandex?
Are you giving it some muscle definiton?
I'm not sure what type of paint to use but the Eastbay shirt is pretty form fitting so natural definition shows up pretty good. Course, the only real definition I have is my triceps. I noticed it while I was taking off the shirt. Then I had to put it back on and flex in front of the mirror for a few minutes.
If your doing the Bat, BatmanBW said he used fabric paint to do his, came out pretty nice.

Re: Airbrushing spandex?
I think you should be able to use any textile airbrush paint. I've used createx textile airbrush paint that I bought at my local hobby store on t shirts. The only problem I see is most textile paints have to be heat set, and I don't know how hot you should get spandex? Maybe someone will chime in who has done this before.

Re: Airbrushing spandex?
I've done a few airbrushed suits like that. Here's something Bat related for reference..
You can see the rest of the suit in progress at Ultimates Batsuit
Hope it helps,

Re: Airbrushing spandex?
Thanks guys, I have a particular way I want to airbrush this suit. Hopefully I can be done with it by Halloween. Don't want to say exactly what I'm doing yet.

Re: Airbrushing spandex?
David thats superb :up Did you use a dark colour to draw the muscle outline or is a dark suit and you use a light colour to high light the muscle?? :huh whichever, its impressive
EDIT!! I've just had an idea, I'm not sure if it will work so any feedback would be good.
I thought that if I stretch my suit onto a card body shape so it will lie flat on the floor, then cut out card shapes of the muscle groups, lay them on the suit and spray from a distance so you don't get sharp edges to the outlines. wait till it dries remove the card muscle shapes and Voila!! I think I would use a grey spray slightly darker than the suit.
Is that a numpty idea or does any think it will work :huh :ohwell :raiseeybrow

Re: Airbrushing spandex?
I think that would work, Colin. Only thing is I don't know if you want sharp edges and lines for muscles. Softer edges look more organic.
Re a different question, I believe you cannot heat set regular spandex or lycra. I THINK it needs to be a lycra/cotton blend in order to accept being heat set.

Re: Airbrushing spandex?
I used regular black and white spray paint on spandex a few years back. I had no airbrushing experience and just wanted to see if it would work. The suit still wears fine and the results were suitable.
