I agree, Kevin. RTDK by Miller is one my favorites. I dig the idea of a mid aged psychologicaly conflicted Batman. I also love the cowl style.

yeah you say that, fair point, but its supposed to be at the end of his career, whenever that may be. so its not in the middle of the continuity or anything, but t the end, therefore not ruining continuity because everything else has gone before.
I understand when the story takes place. I read it. But it is not (and Powers That Be willing, never shall be) part of the official continuity of Batman. Past, Present or Future. It is nothing more than an Elseworlds story or a "What If...?" tale. IIRC the quote at the beginning of every Elseworlds reads: "Characters are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places. Ones that can't exist, couldn't exist or shouldn't exist." - And that pretty much fits DKR

I think you just have to look at some of these as separate stories and not as part of the official continuity. Thing is, which of the current story lines IS the official one?
There are so man, is there still just one DC series running along side the spin offs?

Re: Which comic story lines should I read? Recommendations wanted!
Agreed. They are separate stories that have nothing to do with the original character that we love other than having a vauge familiarity. "Dark Knight Returns" has as much to do with Batman as "Gotham By Gaslight" does. (Problem is so many people seem to forget that)
The list that I gave you is official continuity stories in chronological order. From the beginning of Batman's career up until now. There are some stories in between but I included the more important ones, and generally, better written ones. The list takes you all the way up to a few years ago.
ALL the current storylines are in continuity, unless otherwise noted. So, the titles "Batman," "Detective," "Justice League" etc. are all "official" (again, unless otherwise noted). Basically, if Batman is in it, and there is nothing to state to the contrary, it's part of the Batman continuity. Does that make sense? There is no one comic title that holds the "official" story. They all do. And with the way DC Comics has been doing things lately, they usually tie in to each other. Which, as a comic reader is both interesting, cool and aggravating. It's awesome how things happening to Batman in one title can affect him in another but it also makes it hard to keep up with certain "big" characters who appear in multiple titles a month, sometimes a week.
I did forget to include "A Death in the Family" and the "Knightfall" series. Here is a revised list:
Batman: Year One
Batman and the Monster Men
Batman and the Mad Monk
The Man Who Laughs
The Long Halloween
Dark Victory
A Death in the Family
The Killing Joke
Knightfall 1-3
Cataclysm
No Man’s Land Vol. 1-5
Evolution
Officer Down
Bruce Wayne: Murderer?
Bruce Wayne: Fugitive Vol. 1-3
Hush Vol. 1-2
Broken City
Superman/Batman Vol. 1: Public Enemies
Superman/Batman Vol. 2: Supergirl
Superman/Batman Vol. 3: Absolute Power
War Drums
War Games Act One
War Games Act Two
War Games Act Three
War Crimes
Kingdom Come (it should be noted this isn't in continuity officially either (but is an amazing story with even more amazing art by Alex Ross). However, the current head of DC is pushing the universe in a direction that shows a clear connection between the "now" and the "then" of the story)

The comics is what got me into The Batman and it's comics that keep me into The Batman.
Seriously, the comics are where it's at.

I can vouch for the "Hush" story line from 2002-2003.

listen, dont get defensive, is it just you aloud to voice your opinions and burn everyone elses down with your knowledge?
opinions differ my friend. thats a fact unfortunately. and that goes for how writers write, bear in mind we are talking about a fictional character here, so as to whether there is a "correct" timeline or not is a bit of a moot point, as long as nothing outlandish and horrendously out of context happens.

A reminder to play nice is given at this time.
I liked the "Nevermore" Elseworlds story. Batman meets Poe. The World's Greatest Detective meets the guy who came up with the detective story as we know it. It's not great, and it doesn't stink.
